A 6.2 magnitude earthquake strikes southwest Mexico

MEXICO CITY — A 6.2-magnitude earthquake struck an area in southwestern Mexico early Sunday, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, without causing serious damage or casualties.

She added that the epicenter of the earthquake was 13 miles southeast of Aquila, near the border of the states of Colima and Michoacán, at a depth of 21 miles.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on the social media platform X that the earthquake prompted emergency response teams to review their protocol.

“There are no new developments,” she wrote. Mexico's Social Security Institute said there were no reports of damage in the capital, Mexico City, about 372 miles east of the quake's epicenter — near the mountainous village of Colcomán in Michoacán.

Some people in Colcumán and in Uruapan, Michoacán's second-largest city, posted surveillance footage on social media time-stamped at 2:32 a.m. local time, which showed buildings shaking and parked cars shaking. Others reported that they ran into the streets to wait for the tremors to stop.

The Mexican National Seismological Service said that as of 9 a.m. local time on Sunday, there had been 329 aftershocks. Its strength was estimated at 6.1. It is not unusual for initial measurements to vary.
