15 years after the Haiti earthquake: The struggle to find hope

Haiti, which has just marked the 15th anniversary of the earthquake that killed a quarter of a million of its residents, faces a bleak year ahead, with hunger, displacement and the continuing threat of street gangs. The United Nations is currently offering assistance, but it is not enough to address the rapidly worsening crisis.

On January 12, 2010, a 7.0-magnitude earthquake destroyed Haiti's fragile housing and infrastructure, killing an estimated two hundred and fifty thousand Haitians. One hundred and two United Nations peacekeepers also died when their headquarters in Port-au-Prince collapsed and collapsed when it was crushed by shock waves.

Now, all these years later, another peacekeeping contingent, led by 400 Kenyan police, has returned to Haiti. However, although their security presence is welcome, it is just a tear in the vortex of chaos and disarray afflicting the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Infamous street gangs, who have formed a vicious alliance, control most of the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area and its surrounding hinterland. France and the United States provide money and equipment, but there are no police or forces to stop or prevent a tidal wave of crime and murder.

Poverty, crime, violence, displacement

The United Nations Human Rights Office reported that 5,600 people were killed last year, 2,200 were injured, 1,500 were kidnapped, and thousands fled the violence. Last year, the neighboring Dominican Republic expelled more than 200,000 migrants from Haiti and is building a border fence to divide the island of Hispaniola, which the two countries are supposed to share.

The situation descended into chaos and anarchy, following the assassination of Haiti's 43rd President, Juvenal Moise, on July 7, 2021, by a group of 28 mercenaries, most of them from Colombia. Haiti's bleakest period was from 1957 to 1971 when it was ruled with an iron fist by the cruel dictator François “Papa Doc” Duvalier and his death squad of Tonton Macoutes. After his death, he was succeeded by his son, Jean-Claude “Baby Doc” Duvalier, who continued to be miserable until his exile in 1986.

Few, if any, countries have suffered so severely over such an extended period of time, amounting to decades.

And yet, even today, in the first month of 2025, the international community remains blatantly and inexplicably indifferent, even though Haiti teeters on the brink of despair, dying day by day, in painful degrees.
