A 6.6-magnitude earthquake strikes southern Japan near the Nankai Basin, raising tsunami warnings
Southern Japan was hit by a strong earthquake that authorities said did not require issuing a strong earthquake warning like the one that was issued for the first time last year.
An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 struck the Kyushu region at 9:19 p.m. local time on Monday, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
The earthquake's magnitude was later revised to 6.6.
After the investigation, the JMA said the earthquake did not warrant special measures related to seismic activity in the Nankai Basin.
The Nankai Basin, where the Philippine Sea Plate slides beneath the Eurasian Plate on the seafloor off the southwestern coast of Japan, produces massive earthquakes about every 100 to 150 years.
Japan is frequently hit by earthquakes due to its location along the Ring of Fire, an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.
Experts at the meteorological agency met late Monday to assess the extent of the latest quake's connection to the Nankai area quake, but decided not to take any extraordinary measures for the time being.
The Nankai Trough earthquake off Shikoku Island in 1946 killed more than 1,300 people.
The region was hit by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in August last year.
Strong earthquakes nearby are seen as a possible indicator of the possibility of a huge earthquake.
The tragedy of the 2011 Japanese tsunami still haunts many
The JMA in August issued a week-long warning of a “relatively greater chance” of a strong 9.0 magnitude earthquake after a 7.1 magnitude quake struck the southwest of the country.
After Monday's earthquake, tsunami warnings were issued with waves reaching a maximum height of one meter in the southern prefectures of Miyazaki and Kochi.
Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) reported that a tsunami with a height of 20 centimeters was later recorded and reached the city of Miyazaki.
All tsunami warnings were lifted at noon.
The Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) said that no malfunction had been reported at the Ikata Nuclear Power Plant in western Japan or the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant in Kagoshima Prefecture, referring to the two stations closest to the site of the earthquake.
