A strong earthquake hits southwestern Japan, followed by a tsunami warning

TOKYO – A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.9 struck southwestern Japan, the Japan Meteorological Agency said Monday, while warning residents to stay away from coastal areas due to the tsunami threat.

Tsunami warnings were issued for Miyazaki Prefecture, where the quake was centered, on the southwestern island of Kyushu, as well as nearby Kochi Prefecture, on Shikoku Island, shortly after the quake struck at 9:19 p.m. local time, according to the agency.

There were no immediate reports of damage. Residents in some coastal areas were asked to evacuate their homes as a precaution. NHK reported that a man was slightly injured in Kyushu after falling down some stairs. Trains stopped running at Miyazaki Station, leaving passengers stranded.

The Japanese Broadcasting Corporation (NHK) said that tsunami waves, estimated at about 3.2 feet high, reached the ground within 30 minutes of the earthquake. Reports said the water detected in Miyazaki Port was 0.7 feet high.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake, whose epicenter was at a depth of 18.6 miles, shook a wide area in Kyushu, the main island in the country's southwest.

Japan is frequently hit by earthquakes because of its location along the “Ring of Fire,” an arc of volcanoes and fault lines in the Pacific Basin.

NHK television footage showed traffic moving and streets well-lit, meaning electrical power was still working. No problems were detected at various monitoring centers for nuclear plants in the region.

Experts at the meteorological agency were meeting late Monday to assess the extent of the latest quake's connection to the so-called Nankai Trough earthquakes.

The term refers to a large area believed to be vulnerable to periodic major earthquakes. The Nankai Trough earthquake off Shikoku Island in 1946 killed more than 1,300 people. The region was hit by a 7.1-magnitude earthquake in August last year.
