Need for development of earthquake warning systems: PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday (January 14, 2025) urged scientists to work on developing earthquake warning systems, noting that advances in weather science have helped the country reduce losses due to natural disasters.

In his address on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Mr. Modi also launched 'Mission Mausam' to develop cutting-edge weather monitoring technologies and systems, implement high-resolution meteorological observations, next-generation radars and satellites, and high-performance computers. .

“We have launched 'Mission Mausam' to make India weather-ready and climate-smart,” Modi said.

The MOOSSAM mission will also focus on improving understanding of weather and climate processes, providing air quality data that will help inform long-term weather management and intervention strategy.

“Meteorology provides the most important support to any country's ability to manage disasters. To reduce the impact of natural disasters, we need to maximize the efficiency of meteorology,” the Prime Minister said.

He said that progress in science and the ability to harness its full potential constitute the cornerstone in shaping the global reputation of any country.

“There is a need to develop earthquake warning systems and scientists and researchers must work in this direction,” Mr. Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that India's disaster management capabilities have improved significantly due to advancement in meteorological technology which has proven beneficial not only to the country but also to the global community.

“Today, our flash flood guidance system provides important information to neighboring countries, including Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka,” Mr. Modi said.

The Prime Minister said that India has emerged as the first country to provide assistance to its neighboring countries that have been hit by any disaster.

Mr. Modi also released IMD's Vision 2047 document on weather resilience and climate change adaptation and a commemorative coin to mark 150 years of IMD.

The celebrations were attended by Celeste Saulo, Secretary General of the World Meteorological Administration, Minister of Earth Sciences Jitendra Singh, Minister of Earth Sciences M Ravichandran, Director General of the International Meteorological Institute Mrutyunjay Mohapatra and a host of dignitaries.
