Experts warn of the possibility of strong earthquakes in western Japan next week

Japanese authorities called on people to remain alert in anticipation of possible strong tremors next week, after a 6.6-magnitude earthquake struck off Miyazaki Prefecture in southern Japan on Monday evening, local time.

The tsunami reached parts of Miyazaki and Kochi prefectures. But the tsunami warning for the two provinces was lifted later Monday evening.

The magnitude 6.6 earthquake occurred in the Hyuganada Sea, off the coast of Miyazaki Prefecture, at 9:19 p.m., and in the worst-affected areas its intensity was less than 5 on the Japanese scale from 0 to 7. The intensity is estimated at 5 on the Japanese Richter scale. 36 km deep.

In Miyazaki City, the quake broke a large window at a railway station and knocked some bottles off shelves about two meters high at a liquor store.

The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a tsunami warning, but later lifted it. In Miyazaki, a 20 cm high tsunami was observed, while Kochi reported a 10 cm high tsunami.

The agency lifted the warning at 11:50 pm on Monday. Japanese authorities are still urging people working at sea to be careful.

The operator of the Sendai Nuclear Power Plant in Kagoshima Prefecture said there had been no reports of any malfunction at the facility so far, and that radiation levels around the plant had not changed.

Some local trains in Miyazaki Prefecture have suspended operations since the earthquake. The Kyushu Shinkansen bullet train was running at low speed between Kumamoto and Shinyatsushiro.

A seismologist at Kyoto University said Monday's quake may have occurred where tectonic plates meet.

Associate Professor Yamashita Yusuke of the Disaster Prevention Research Institute at Kyoto University is an expert on the mechanics of the Nankai Basin. He was analyzing seismic activity in Miyazaki Prefecture.

Yamashita said Monday's quake occurred on the edge of the area where a 7.1-magnitude earthquake occurred in the Hyuganada Sea, off Miyazaki, in August last year. He noted that the remaining faulted area could have moved.

Yamashita said the latest tremor would have little impact on the potential massive Nankai earthquake. He pointed out that the seismic energy released by Monday's earthquake was about half that released by the August earthquake.

But he urges caution against tremors of a similar scale at the moment, with the latest quake approaching a magnitude of seven.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the quake was believed to be part of seismic activities, including a strong earthquake that struck the region in August. The agency called on people to remain alert, saying more strong tremors could occur next week.

On Tuesday, the agency held a press conference with the Japanese Geospatial Information Authority.
