A strong earthquake swarmed in Bararbunga

An earthquake swarm began in Bararbunga at 7am today, with the largest magnitude 4.5 earthquake measured at 6:29am.

In the early morning, three earthquakes with a magnitude higher than 3 were measured, out of which 40 earthquakes were measured. A statement issued by the Icelandic Meteorological Office said that the swarm is located in the northwestern caldera and is considered somewhat unusual.

Up to 20 earthquakes above magnitude 3

The intensity of the Bararbunga earthquake swarm decreased significantly at around 9am this morning; Only a few earthquakes have been measured since then.

Despite the reduced activity, earthquakes are still being measured and ongoing developments will be closely monitored, according to the statement from the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

The earthquake swarm began shortly after 6am this morning and peaked at 8.05am when the largest earthquake of magnitude 5.1 occurred.
