A 2.8 magnitude earthquake was felt in Richmond, Virginia

The earthquake had a minor impact at around 5:30 pm on Tuesday. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Windham, Virginia, a suburb of Richmond.

WINDHAM, Va. — More than 1,000 people reported feeling a 2.8 magnitude earthquake on Tuesday, according to a USGS study released Tuesday.

The earthquake had a minor impact at around 5:30 pm on Tuesday. The epicenter of the earthquake was in Windham, Virginia, a suburb of Richmond in Henrico County, according to the US Geological Survey.

“We are aware of a 2.8 magnitude earthquake that was felt by residents of central Virginia,” Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin said Tuesday night. “Our teams are now contacting local government officials and working to assess the impact.”

It was Governor Youngkin's first statement on an earthquake affecting the commonwealth, an uncommon assignment for U.S. governors who preside over states east of the Rocky Mountains.

The Richter scale is used to classify the intensity of earthquakes, with 1 being the lowest and least dangerous, and 9.9 being the highest, rarest and most severe. An earthquake measuring 2.8 on the Richter scale is considered a “weak” earthquake that does not usually result in damage to buildings or property. As of Tuesday evening, there were no reports of damage from the earthquake that occurred in the afternoon.

The strongest earthquake ever to hit Virginia was in 2011, when a 5.8-magnitude quake caused an estimated $200 million in damage in the commonwealth. Although the epicenter was also near Richmond, Virginia, Washington, D.C. and Maryland reported some damage and buildings were evacuated.

Seismologists, who study earthquakes, report that earthquakes in the eastern United States, although less common, have the potential to be more destructive than earthquakes on the West Coast.

“East of the Rocky Mountains, the earthquake could be felt over an area 10 times larger than a similar earthquake on the West Coast,” USGS officials said Tuesday after assessing the Virginia quake.

In April 2024, New Jersey and New York reported damage after a 4.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Garden State, in another rare earthquake on the East Coast.
