Update on the Church's response to the earthquake in Vanuatu – Church News

In the weeks following a 7.3-magnitude earthquake just offshore of the most populous island of Vanuatu on December 17, 2024, the church continues to purchase and deliver essential supplies to communities in need.

All missionaries and members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the island nation are safe, according to a press release from the church's Pacific Newsroom.

“Leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints are actively monitoring the situation and assisting communities affected by the earthquake,” the news release said.

The epicenter of the quake was about 18 miles (30 kilometers) west of Port Vila, the port capital and main center of Vanuatu. Fourteen people were killed and more than 200 injured in the powerful earthquake.

Besides destroying buildings, the earthquake also caused landslides, cutting off roads and bridges and polluting water sources.

A report issued by the National Disaster Management Office said that nearly 80,000 people were affected and 1,473 were displaced from their homes. In the days following the disaster, UNICEF Pacific estimated that about 40,000 children were in need of humanitarian assistance.

As of 8 January, RNZ Pacific reported that electricity, water and telephone services had largely been restored but the internet was still mostly unavailable.

The church provided four Starlink satellite modules delivered from Auckland, New Zealand, with support from the New Zealand Defense Force.

Vanuatu, an archipelago of about 80 islands, is home to nearly 12,000 Latter-day Saints in 39 congregations. The nation has its own mission, and last year the foundation stone for a temple was laid in Port Vila.

Vanuatu is located on the seismically active Ring of Fire in the Pacific Ocean, and is classified among the countries in the world most at risk from natural disasters and extreme weather phenomena, according to Reuters.

Before the earthquake, Vanuatu Port Vila Mission Chief, Ben Paul, equipped all missionaries with emergency preparedness equipment. The church also keeps shipping containers full of emergency supplies in several Pacific communities, including several in Vanuatu.

Missionaries and local members are focused on helping those in need, Pacific Newsroom reported.
