UNICEF sends supplies to help children and pregnant women affected by the Xizang earthquake – China

BEIJING, 16 JANUARY 2025 – UNICEF has sent urgently needed emergency relief supplies to children and families affected by the devastating earthquake that struck Dingri County in Xizang Autonomous Region, also known as Tibet, on 7 January 2025. This follows a request From local governments from Dingri District and neighboring Sajia District, through Rekazi District.

At least 126 people were confirmed dead and 188 injured, following the 6.8 magnitude earthquake, and more than 30,000 people were moved to makeshift camps. In the two districts where UNICEF provides support, more than 10,000 children under the age of seven have been affected. They are located in a mountainous area where night temperatures can drop to -17 degrees Celsius, making it difficult for vulnerable children to stay warm in temporary shelters such as tents.

“When an earthquake strikes, children and pregnant women are often among the most vulnerable groups and have special needs,” said UNICEF Representative in China Amakubi Sande. “UNICEF is responding quickly to deliver much-needed supplies to meet the needs of children and families facing extreme conditions and we support the government’s response efforts. We will also support children’s long-term recovery to ensure they have the psychosocial support they need to recover.

In response to the earthquake, UNICEF is delivering 40 tons of supplies for newborns, young children and pregnant women in affected areas. This includes thousands of diapers for babies and toddlers, warm winter clothes for children under seven, and winter quilts and jackets for pregnant women. The first batch of supplies, including more than 400 sets of winter clothing for toddlers and 65 sets of newborn kits, arrived on January 15 in Dingri District.

In addition to providing emergency assistance, UNICEF will work with local partners to provide long-term psychosocial support to affected children. In cooperation with the China Academy of Social Work, and under the coordination of the Central Community Work Department, UNICEF will provide mental health services and psychosocial support to children and families affected by the earthquake in Dingri District.
