Palestinians in Gaza are celebrating news of a cease-fire between Israel and Hamas and the release of hostages. The ceasefire that aims to mark the end of the 15-month war will begin on January 19. US President Joe Biden has confirmed that an agreement has been reached for a full and complete ceasefire, the withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza and the release of all hostages held by Hamas. Hamas is said to have taken 94 hostages, of which 34 are dead. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held out for months on a cease-fire and hostage deal under pressure from right-wing members of his cabinet, aware that a deal could bring down his government. However, it is understood that the prospect of US President-elect Donald Trump taking office put pressure on both Israel and Hamas. This latest bloody phase of the decades-long conflict began on October 7, 2023, when Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing around 1,200 people and returning 251 hostages to Gaza. The attack triggered a major Israeli offensive in Gaza, killing more than 46,000 Palestinians, according to the Hamas-run Health Ministry. The obstacles to any lasting peace are high. Much of Gaza is in ruins and Hamas has said it will not forget Israel for the suffering it has inflicted on Palestinians there. Many nations are now calling for a focus on a two-state solution to address the roots of the more than 70-year-old conflict.
