Paramount+ sets release date for 'Death Without Mercy'

Syrian director Waad Al Khatib’s latest documentary, “Death Without Mercy,” will begin streaming on Paramount+ on February 6.

The MTV Documentary Film documentary follows two Syrian families over the course of ten days in the aftermath of a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the Turkish-Syrian border in 2023. The quake killed 55,000 people. The film will be released on Paramount+ on the second anniversary of the fatal event.

Al-Khatib — the activist and director of the 2020 Oscar-nominated documentary “For Sama” — was not in Syria for the 2023 earthquake. After hearing about the tragedy while in London, the filmmaker immediately began reaching out to people on the ground, including her friends. The film tells the story of two Syrian families as they search for their missing loved ones, while also revealing the corruption, government neglect, and systemic failures that exacerbated the impact of the disaster.

“Sheila was a major part of this film,” Al-Khatib says. “The moment we got the call, I heard someone who was very excited, who was very concerned, who was very angry. She had the same anger that I had as the Syrian, who had let the whole world down with this unbelievable disaster.
