Dharamshala, Jan. 18, 2019 (Xinhua) — China has reported structural damage, including cracks, in five out of 14 hydropower dams in Tibet, following a strong earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale. The earthquake occurred near Dengri County in Shigatse Prefecture on January 7 at 9:05 a.m. local time.

After investigating 14 dams in the quake-affected area, Tibet emergency management officials announced at a press conference that five dams were damaged. Of these dams, three have since been emptied to mitigate the risks. One reservoir was severely damaged, with its walls tilting, necessitating the evacuation of about 1,500 residents from six villages downstream.

Currently, efforts are continuing to reduce water levels in three reservoirs, while the fourth reservoir is being completely drained. Monitoring equipment has been installed to track the stability of affected structures, and emergency repairs are being implemented.

The earthquake has raised concerns again about the vulnerability of China's large-scale hydropower projects in Tibet.
