Earthquake victims move into a cracked house to escape the cold

By Sher Bahadur Sarki, Bajura, January 18: Victims of the earthquake in Bajura district, who were living under trampoline sheets to stay safe from the quake, have started returning to their cracked homes again due to lack of other provisions and options.

Many homes have been torn apart by the earthquakes, but since the government has failed to make better arrangements elsewhere, earthquake victims have no option to return to their damaged homes.

On December 21, 2025, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake occurred in Gotri of Jagannath Rural Municipality. This led to the complete destruction of 146 homes, and 866 homes were partially damaged.

Local Atiram Damai from Gotri in Jagannath Rural Municipality-5 said that although his house cracked in the earthquake, there were many provisions or other options from anywhere, but I had to return to my destroyed house.

“We stayed under the trampoline for several days because of the earthquake,” he said. “The mercury began to fall, which forced us to choose the destroyed house.”

He said that the houses are slowly cracking due to the numerous earthquakes that have struck the region since 2021. It is difficult to build a new house due to the lack of financial resources.

There are 45-year-old houses built with mud and stone in Himali, Swamikartik Khabar Rural Municipality, Jagannath Rural Municipality, Budinanda Municipality, Gomul Rural Municipality, Badimalika Municipality, Budhiganga Munikplatti Municipality, Triveni Municipality and Khaptad Chididadha Rural Municipality. Now, the earthquake has caused serious damage to these homes.

Bajura District Chief District Officer Megh Nath Badia said 1,666 houses were damaged due to the 2022 earthquake and 1,844 homes were damaged due to the 2023 earthquake, and 146 houses were destroyed and 866 were partially destroyed due to the December 21, 2024 earthquake.

He said: “Earthquake-resistant houses must be built to avoid destruction caused by earthquakes, but the houses are still built with old designs, which makes local residents face a lot of risks while living in those houses.”

Local levels have been matched to make local residents build earthquake-resistant houses as there is a record of recent earthquakes repeatedly causing major damage to the same house.

Civil affairs chief Meg Nath Badia said that since the earthquake victims lacked sufficient funds even to build houses, they have now demanded Rs 15 million from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
