Meckering earthquake: A 3.8 magnitude earthquake shakes homes in Washington

A 3.8 magnitude earthquake shook homes in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia.

The quake was recorded in Mekering, about 150 kilometers from Perth, at 11.12am, with people from Mundaring to Mekering reporting they heard a loud bang and felt the ground move.

Alison Harris, chair of the Shire of Cunderden, said the quake had caused some excitement, but there were no reports of damage.

“It appears that the tremors were felt widely from Tammin to Killerbreen and near Bolgart, but we have not heard of any damage,” she said.

Graham Cooper, a volunteer at the Conderden Museum, said he heard a loud bang and thought there was a collision outside.

He said: “I did not feel the ground shaking, but there was a strong explosion that lasted for a few seconds.”

Tremors from the quake shook homes in Clacklin and Northam, more than 50 kilometers away.

Clacklin resident Danielle Cara said she was in her kitchen when her house started shaking.

She said: “I was wiping the kitchen chairs, when I heard the glass hitting each other and the floor started shaking.”

“I heard a loud rumbling sound. My first thought was, 'It's the washing machine…' Then I realized I hadn't turned the washing machine on. So my next thought was, 'Wow, this is an earthquake.'

A spokesman for the Fire and Emergency Services Department said there were no calls related to the earthquake.

Mekering suffered extensive damage in October 1968 after a 6.5 magnitude earthquake struck the city.
