Muscat residents share their experiences with earthquakes

Muscat: A mild earthquake struck Muscat on Sunday afternoon, leading to a wave of panic among residents of the Wadi Al Kabir, Ruwi and Darsait areas.

An earthquake measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale was recorded in Muscat at 2.43 pm today, according to the Seismic Center at Sultan Qaboos University.

The monitoring center said that the epicenter of the earthquake was about 3 kilometers south of Muscat.

Residents of Muscat suddenly began to feel a slight tremor, as household items began to shake noticeably.

Many people, disturbed by the sudden movement, also left their homes. “Everything was shaking for a few seconds,” a Roy resident said.

Residents of Ruwi also reported that they felt the earthquake, confirming the disturbing event. “Yes, I felt it. I was resting at my house near Ruwi Stock Exchange when I suddenly realized that my bed was shaking. Lying on the bed, I thought it was a dream. Next to my apartment, there is a repair and maintenance operation going on for the past two days. Another resident, Sarfaraz Daoud Baghdadi, said he felt two tremors. “I felt two tremors in Wadi Kabir near the Indian Kindergarten School – one was close to four to five seconds long and the second one two minutes later I felt it for a second,” he said.

Another resident, Aswathy Mithun, said: Three of our colleagues felt the tremors three times yesterday afternoon. A resident of Wadi Al Kabir said: “The first was at 2:44 p.m., the second at 2:52 p.m., and the third at 3 p.m..”

Another resident who lives on Rex Road said she felt the earthquake while working. “I was watching TV at the time and I jumped out of my chair thinking it might get intense,” she said. She added that the tremors faded within a few seconds.
