ADDIS ABABA – Following a series of seismic activities in parts of Afar and Oromia, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) reported that “some residents in the Awash and Dulisha areas are reluctant to evacuate, particularly pastoralist communities who are concerned about their fate.” Livestock and property.” In response, the Incident Command Center (ICP) is considering implementing mandatory evacuations in high-risk areas to ensure public safety, according to the UN agency.

In its latest update, prepared with the support of IASC Group coordinators and partners, OCHA highlighted growing security concerns in earthquake-affected areas of Oromia.

“The movement of nearly 400,000 livestock has severely disrupted the livelihoods of herders, as evacuation sites lack suitable land to sustain these animals,” the update stated. “Agricultural and pastoral communities face significant challenges, including abandoned crops, lack of fodder and water for displaced livestock, competition for resources with host communities, and fears of disease spreading among livestock.”

Reports indicate continued seismic activity in the Afar and Oromiya regions, where 18 earthquakes (ranging in magnitude from 4.3 to 5.2) were recorded last week, attributed to the Vental volcanic complex. The government is currently evacuating more than 60,000 people from high-risk areas to safer locations. These evacuations are focusing on areas affected by ongoing earthquakes, areas prone to rockfall, and locations near ash emission sites active since January 2, 2025.

According to OCHA, the ongoing transfers and the arrival of new displaced people have exacerbated the urgent need for adequate shelter.

“Many evacuees live in open spaces with temporary shelters, such as plastic roofs or poorly built traditional dome-shaped structures, leaving them exposed to extreme heat during the day, cold nights and strong winds,” OCHA stressed. “The absence of adequate shelter increases vulnerability, especially for women, girls and children, while the lack of mosquito nets increases the risk of malaria outbreaks.”

Last week, Addis Standard reported that individuals displaced by recent earthquakes in the Afar region are struggling to survive in overcrowded shelters, facing severe shortages of food, water and basic supplies. Many residents expressed that the assistance provided by the government and humanitarian organizations was insufficient, leaving vulnerable residents in critical conditions.

In a previous update, OCHA indicated that food aid had reached 6,780 families in evacuation areas in Afar, which host the largest number of displaced people. However, 2,250 families remain without any support. like
