A strong earthquake in Taiwan injures 27 people and causes scattered damage

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday, leaving 27 people with minor injuries and some reported damage.

Taiwan's Central Meteorological Administration said the earthquake occurred at 12:17 a.m. and its epicenter was 38 kilometers (24 miles) southeast of Chiayi County Hall and at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles). The US Geological Survey measured the earthquake at a magnitude of less than 6.

There were scattered reports of minor to moderate damage around the cities of Chiayi and Tainan.

The Taiwan Fire Department said that 27 people were taken to hospitals with minor injuries. They included six people, including a one-month-old baby, who were rescued from a collapsed house in Tainan's Nanxi District. The Chuwei Bridge, located on a provincial highway, was reported to have been damaged.

No deaths have been reported, although rescuers are still assessing the damage.

Two people in Tainan and one person in Chiayi City were rescued without injuries after they were trapped in elevators.

The earthquake caused a fire in a printing factory in Chiayi, but it was extinguished, and no injuries were reported.

Last April, a 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the mountainous eastern coast of Hualien Island, killing at least 13 people and injuring more than 1,000 others. The strongest earthquake in 25 years was followed by hundreds of aftershocks.
