M6.4 earthquake hits southern Taiwan, injuring 44 people

A 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southern Taiwan shortly after midnight Monday, damaging buildings and injuring at least 44 people, according to island authorities.

The fire agency said that the epicenter of the earthquake, which shook the island at 12:17 a.m., was located in the town of Dabu in Chiayi Province, at a depth of 9.7 kilometers. There were no immediate reports of deaths.

Multiple aftershocks hit the area early Tuesday morning.

Nanxi District in Tainan was one of the worst affected areas, where a local official said that about 100 families had their homes damaged, with electricity and water supplies cut off in some areas.

A 51-year-old Nanxi resident said: “I woke up after a sudden big jolt and smelled gas that might have leaked. I don't know what to do.” The wall of the residents' three-story home collapsed, and pieces of broken glass were scattered across the room.

“I'm scared because of the constant aftershocks. I don't want to go home,” said an 87-year-old evacuee at a local shelter.

The authorities called for caution, warning of the possibility of major aftershocks occurring during the next three days.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., the world's largest chipmaker, said it had temporarily evacuated its employees from several factories in central and southern Taiwan in the wake of the powerful earthquake. The company added that all TSMC sites resumed normal operations later.
