TSMC stations operating after the earthquake call for evacuations

TAIPEI (Reuters) – Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSM, 2330.TW) said on Tuesday that all of its sites were operational following a 6.4-magnitude earthquake that occurred overnight in southern Taiwan.

TSMC, the dominant manufacturer of advanced chips and a major supplier to companies including Apple (AAPL) and Nvidia (NVDA), said it evacuated workers at some sites in central and southern Taiwan as a precaution after the earthquake, which occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday. The epicenter of the earthquake was in a mountainous rural area and caused only minor damage and minor injuries.

“Post-earthquake structural inspections have been completed at all sites, confirming that the structures are safe and operations are gradually resuming,” TSMC said in an emailed statement.

“At present, the water supply, power and workplace safety systems are operating normally and all TSMC sites are operational. Detailed inspections and impact assessments are underway.”

It added that TSMC's construction sites were not affected and continued regular operations after environmental safety checks.

Taiwan's fire department said 27 people were treated in hospital for their injuries following the quake, while Taipower said power had been restored by mid-morning for all 30,000 households affected by the power outage.

Taiwan is located near the intersection of two tectonic plates, and is prone to earthquakes.

The last major earthquake to hit Taiwan was last April, with a magnitude of 7.2 hitting Hualien County on the east coast, killing 13 people.
