26 injured and 50 isolated following the earthquakes

Taipei, Jan. 21 (CNA) A 6.4-magnitude earthquake and several aftershocks struck southern Taiwan early Tuesday morning, causing homes and roads to collapse, injuring dozens and isolating 50 people in their village.

Twenty-six people were reported injured and sent to hospitals due to the quake as of late Tuesday morning, according to the latest Department of Health and Social Care figures.

In Xixing Village, Dabo District, Chiayi Province, the site of the epicenter, severe damage was seen and roads leading to the village were closed, isolating about 50 villagers.

Offices and schools in Dabbo were closed on Tuesday due to damage.

The National Fire Agency said that eight other people who were trapped inside buildings in Tainan and Chiayi City were rescued.

Meanwhile, the road in Kaohsiung's Jiasian district was closed due to falling rocks, but was later cleared, according to the Highway Bureau.

In Haitwan Township in Taitung, the road was also closed due to a cliff collapse. The Highway Office expects one lane to be open by noon and traffic to resume in both directions by 3 p.m

The main quake struck Chiayi at 12:17 a.m., and the highest intensity in Dabu was measured at -6 on Taiwan's 7-level intensity scale, an intensity level that is difficult to stay at, according to the Central Weather Administration (CWA). .

As of 3:30 a.m., nearly 50 aftershocks had been recorded in southern Taiwan, the strongest of which was a magnitude 5.2 at 1:42 a.m., CWA data showed.
