What happened, where and when?

The Vental Volcanic Complex on the Main Ethiopian Rift has seen increased seismic activity. In late December 2024, the frequency of earthquakes increased by several magnitudes, accompanied by the opening of steam vents (the release of steam and gases from underground). From January 4 to 6, more than 20 earthquakes hit the Ouach-Vental region, the strongest being a 5.8 magnitude earthquake, which occurred on January 4 near the Dauphin Mountains. This earthquake caused significant damage to community shelters and social services, and this upwelling is believed to be related to magma movement, although it is uncertain whether an eruption will occur and from which volcano or vent – at Vental, Dauphine or a new location.

About 99,000 people have been affected in the three regions – 60,000 in Afar, 20,000 in Oromia and 9,000 in Amahara – and many residents are unsure of the appropriate measures to take. About 70,000 people have already been transferred, and the government is working to evacuate nearly 30,000 more people.
