5.8 magnitude earthquake in southern Leyte: roads damaged and classes suspended

TACLOBAN CITY — The 5.8-magnitude earthquake that struck the waters off the southern town of Leyte on Thursday morning caused damage to roads and prompted local government units to suspend classes.

The southern Leyte provincial government stated that several roads, including those in Barangays Amaga and Himai Angan, as well as roads in Liloan town, were rendered impassable due to falling debris and severe cracks caused by the quake.

The earthquake occurred at 7:39 a.m. on January 23, with its epicenter six kilometers east of San Francisco.

“We advise residents and travelers to avoid these areas for their safety. Disinfection and assessments are ongoing, and updates will be provided as soon as possible,” the provincial government said in a statement.

San Francisco Mayor Benedicta Tiazon ordered the suspension of classes for the entire city after the earthquake.

The Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office, along with police and firefighters, were immediately deployed to inspect all 22 districts to assess the extent of damage in the municipality, which is located about 70 kilometers from the provincial capital, Maasin City.

“The schoolchildren who panicked were picked up by their parents,” a local police officer said in a phone interview.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was felt in all 18 towns and Maasin City in southern Leyte.

The depth of the tectonic earthquake was 14 kilometers and was also felt to varying degrees in other parts of Visayas and Mindanao.

Phivolcs warned residents in affected areas, especially in southern Leyte, to prepare for possible aftershocks following the quake.
