Earthquake Response: Ethiopia Situation Report No. 01 January 22, 2025 – Ethiopia
Attachments
Quick facts
Intense seismic activity is currently affecting the southern Afar and northern Oromia regions of Ethiopia, especially around the Dofen and Ventali volcanoes on the Main Ethiopian Rift. From January 4 to 16, more than 50 earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 4.2 to 5.8 were recorded. More than 60,000 people were evacuated, including 51,456 from Afar and 20,325 from Oromia, with emergency shelters established. Extensive damage was reported, with 16 schools severely damaged and 21 partially damaged.
Our mark
IMC has been active in Ethiopia since 2003, with emergency programs in the areas of nutrition, primary health care, sexual and reproductive health, mental health and psychosocial support, gender-based violence, livelihoods, disaster risk reduction, and water, sanitation and hygiene. ). Currently, we are providing water, sanitation and hygiene services in Asita and Berhali refugee camps in Afar and responding to cholera outbreaks in Amibara and Doubti.
Our response
In the Diado internally displaced person site, we have prioritized disease prevention and access to safe drinking water, supplying the camp with 13,000 liters of water per day. We trained 26 community health workers and volunteers to combat cholera and infectious diseases.
Seismic activity continues in the Afar and Oromia regions of Ethiopia, especially in the Awash, Dolecha and Fantali regions. From January 4 to 16, at least 50 earthquakes ranging in magnitude from 4.2 to 5.8 were recorded. These tremors are associated with the Vental Volcanic Complex on the Main Ethiopian Rift, which has shown gradual ground deformation since 2021. The increase in activity since late December 2024 has caused steam vents to release gases and vapor, likely due to magma movement.
Although an eruption has not yet been confirmed, possible eruption sites include Dauphin, Vental, or a new vent volcanoes. The earthquakes caused severe damage to homes, health centres, schools and roads, with widening cracks disrupting main roads. There are concerns about the safety of the Kesam/Sabour Dam and the railway line between Ethiopia and Djibouti. The Afar regional government evacuated more than 60,000 people to resettlement sites from high-risk areas. On 12 January, the government relocated an additional 255 families from high-risk areas in the regions of Awash, Dolica and Ventale, bringing the total number of evacuated families to 9,106 (54,636 people), according to local authorities. The evacuees were settled in two locations: Aspoli and Diado.
IMC recently participated in a mission with the Directorate-General of the European Community Humanitarian Office (ECHO) and other partners to visit internally displaced people in the earthquake-affected areas of Amipara, Awash and Ventali. During the mission, the team collaborated with key stakeholders, including the Incident Command Centre, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs, and the Woreda (district) health offices. Stakeholders highlighted the growing needs on the ground and stressed the need to scale up the response.
Newly established IDP camps face serious challenges affecting the health, well-being and dignity of residents. Currently, many evacuees are living in open spaces with temporary shelters with plastic roofs, or poorly built traditional dome-shaped structures. These unsuitable living conditions make them vulnerable to extreme heat during the day, cold nights and strong winds. The lack of adequate shelters increases the risks for women, girls and children, while the lack of mosquito nets increases the risk of malaria. One of the most pressing issues is the lack of basic sanitation facilities, which leads to open defecation, posing major health risks.
The lack of water and basic non-food items, such as water tanks and storage containers, exacerbates the situation. In addition, insufficient supplies of medicines and medical supplies hampered the effectiveness of mobile health and nutrition teams deployed in the camps. Of the 5,000 children screened for severe acute malnutrition, 124 cases were identified. These areas are also highly endemic for malaria and other acute febrile diseases, with diarrheal diseases and pneumonia contributing to the significant disease burden. The displaced people are located in an area affected by cholera, and the current conditions in the camps pose a high risk of transmission among the displaced population.
There are no mental health and psychosocial support (MHPSS) activities to address the trauma and distress caused by the loss of livelihoods, including livestock and buildings, as well as deteriorating living conditions. To make matters worse, food shortages have become a pressing concern, leaving many without access to basic livelihoods.
Working with the Huerda Health Office in IDP sites that requested assistance, International Medical Corps identified the following needs:
medicines, medical supplies and equipment to address the increasing burden on health services; Nutritional commodities to meet the nutritional needs of children; Mental Health and Psychosocial Support Services (MHPSS) to provide support to affected populations; and infection prevention and control measures and supplies.
