MANILA, Philippines – Five people were injured while 191 homes were damaged following a 5.8-magnitude earthquake that rocked the town of San Francisco on Thursday morning, Southern Leyte Gov. Damian Mercado said.

Mercado said on Friday that the provincial government would immediately extend aid to people suffering from the quake.

“There's really damage here. There's damage to the house. 191 is damaged [houses]There is an injury – five. There's a house burning, one. “There is damaged infrastructure – a school, a barangay hall, and one bridge,” the governor said over Radio 630.

The 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the waters off San Francisco, south of Leyte, at 7:39 a.m. on January 23 caused damage to roads and prompted local government units to suspend classes.

Temblor's epicenter is located six kilometers (KM) east of San Francisco. The depth was 14 km.
