Taiwan officials say it was worse than that, if it was not for 150 monitoring stations, an emergency alert system, and the strict construction symbols of the government.

“We are striving to find a better way to make our structures stronger,” said an official from the NCREE Solid Engineering (NCRE) in Taipei.
