For Doddy Morris, a journalist at Vanu'a Daily Post, the 7.3 -sized earthquake that struck Vanu'au last month on December 17, 2024, more than just a story – was a personal tragedy.
Amid chaos, Morris learns his brother, Anglican priest, who has died.
“My mom called me crying and asked,” Did your brother die? “I was not sure and told her that I was heading to Villa Central Hospital immediately.”
Morris arrived at the hospital to confirm the worst. “My heart sank when I confirmed that my brother had already died. At that moment, I forgot my job.”

Despite his grief, Morris joined his remaining brothers in the hospital nurse that night, where he remained on the part of their deceased brother and grieved together. We were the only ones there. We spent all night drinking the kava outside while lying in the cold room. “
The earthquake – which killed 14 people, left more than 265 people, and explained more than 1000 – an indelible sign on Port Villa and its inhabitants. The infrastructure damage was wide, as schools, homes and water reserves were destroyed, and the CPD region was severely affected.
In the days after the earthquake, Morris returned to his role as a correspondent, as he acquired the crisis that was revealed despite the emotional losses. He said, “When the earthquake hit, I thought I would die myself.” However, minutes after calmness of the tremor, he grabbed his camera and rushed to the biological diversity agreement.
In the heart of destruction, he witnessed horrific scenes. “I was shocked to see the collapsed Bilabong building. Morris said:
He thwarted the lack of a network of his efforts to report live, but pressed for documenting the damage.
After a month of disaster, Morris continues to cover the transmission of Vanuato from the emergency response to recovery. A month has passed since the earthquake, but memories are still new. “We don't know when Port Villa will return to normal,” he said.
His photographer showed the true impact of the earthquake as he continues to capture the mourning of the nation after such a tragic event.

The earthquake left deep scars, not only on the nation's infrastructure but also on its people. Morris said: “Unlike the hurricanes, which we can predict, prepare for earthquakes, and survive, strike earthquakes without warning and no mercy appears.”
Through sadness and uncertainty, Morris is still committed to his work, documenting the elasticity of his community and the challenges they face during the reconstruction. His convergence is a testimony to the strength of both the Vanuatu people and the journalist who is still witnessing, even in the face of personal loss.

Reporting his private community during ratification with personal loss is a reality for many Pacific Island journalists covering disasters. For Dodi Morris, reporting the painful events of the earthquake means facing his sadness while documenting the sadness of others.
Dr. Lagipoiva Chelle Jackson is a trainee of the Pacific Press with the DART Center for Press and Shocks. She expressed her support for Morris and his colleagues in showing “extraordinary courage and flexibility.” This article was first published by the new Atoll and is republished with permission.
