After walking for four hours in the area to recover the remains, authorities compared DNA from the hip bone to samples they collected from the missing couple's family members, allowing them to identify the bone as Sim's, the police office said.

Although most of the road area was buried by landslides during the quake, hurricane rains later that year may have washed the remains downstream, the police office said.

Despite searches in the surrounding area, no other human remains were found, including those of Sim's wife, the office said.

A 7.2-magnitude earthquake struck Hualien at 7:58 a.m. on April 3, 2024, killing 18 people and injuring more than 1,100. This was the largest earthquake in Taiwan since 1999.
