The tremor was felt in Norfolk after an earthquake off the coast of Cromer

People reported tremors in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to the British Geological Survey, the earthquake occurred at 4.32 a.m., 62 miles northeast of Cromer in the North Sea.

It had a magnitude of 3.0 and was shallow at a depth of 10 km.

Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deep ones and can be felt as inland as Hardwick, near Long Stratton.

“I woke up from my bed shaking,” Theresa Tyler said.

Thousands of 2.5 to 5.4 earthquakes occur around the world every year, and although they can often be felt, they cause only minor damage.

The only other recorded earthquake in the UK this week was a magnitude 2.8 and occurred on Wednesday morning, 112 miles off the coast of Lerwick in the Shetlands.

There was a 3.2 magnitude earthquake in Norfolk in February 2023.

The epicenter of the earthquake was 42 miles from Cromer and could be felt in coastal areas including Sea Palling, Happisburgh and Mundesley.
