Earthquake Memorial to be held the day before Napier

“People have worked hard to rebuild Napier but they have also found ways to acknowledge what happened on February 3, 1931.

“Reminders of the post-earthquake resilience and spirit of the Napier community are visible in the city center today and include many of our most beloved landmarks.”

Nimmon said the Napier earthquake had always been a big part of her family's history.

“My grandmother was in the womb at the time, giving birth about seven months later,” Nemon said.

“My great aunt looked after her at the house on Bluff Hill, as she was about 3 years old at the time.

Apparently both my grandmother and my great-great-grandmother, Trevor and Mira Geddes, played tennis. When the earthquake happened, their house was falling off the edge of the hill, as my Aunt Mary ran out the front door.

“They soon after moved to France 1, inevitably taking friends and family as many did.

“I understand my cousin opened a school from her home too, where a lot of people crowded in. There is a fascinating history written in many books and pamphlets, but as my grandfather Trevor Napier owned the Daily Telegraph, much of it was documented in papers of course.”

“I learned a lot about that time through stories from my great aunt, who is sadly no longer with us. It is a history I am proud of.”

Veronica Sunbay is named after HMS Veronica, whose officers and crew provided immediate assistance after the earthquake.

The ship's bell was presented to the city in memory of that assistance, Wise said.

“We still use it at important moments, including during earthquake services. The memorial is an opportunity for us to pause and reflect on the actions of those who have gone before us.”

Hastings District Council's remembrance event will share stories of how the event was reshaped.

Wreaths will be placed at the clock tower in memory of the lives lost in the earthquake.

The service begins at 10.30am on 3 February, with the bells of the clock tower ringing at 10.47am.

The special ceremony is open to the general public and is being held at the Hastings City Center Mall to remember the day that changed lives in Hastings and the wider Hawke's Bay, and to celebrate the city and community.
