The earthquake was felt in Boston and its epicenter was in Maine

BOSTON – The epicenter of the earthquake felt in Boston, Massachusetts today was off York Harbor, Maine, according to the USGS. A USGS map showed that residents of New Hampshire and Rhode Island also felt the quake.

The 3.8-magnitude quake occurred at 10:22 a.m., and was initially reported as 4.1 and then 3.9.

“This is like an earthquake that happens once every five years,” John Ebel, a senior scientist at Boston College's Weston Observatory, told WBZ-TV.

The depth of the quake was more than eight miles underground, according to the US Geological Survey. The US National Tsunami Warning Center stated that there is no threat of a tsunami in New England.

“We're not sitting on any active fault lines,” said Terry Eliasen, executive weather producer at WBZ-TV. “But again for our region [it] Really important.”

There were no reports of damage due to the earthquake in Massachusetts

The shaking could be felt for a few seconds in the area, as well as in the newsroom at WBZ-TV in Boston.

“My house shook pretty good,” said WBZ-TV anchor David Wade, who lives west of Boston. “It lasted a good five or 10 seconds.”

Anna Fletcher was working from her home office in Milton when her house started shaking.

“She shook probably about four to five seconds noticeably, and she stood up to check things out but by then it was all over and the dog started barking,” Fletcher told WBZ-TV. “Your mind goes to anything but an earthquake when you live in New England.”

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency said it had received reports of shaking being felt in the state, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

“Remember, during an earthquake: drop, cover and hold on for safety,” the agency said.

Will there be aftershocks from the earthquake in Boston?

“There will definitely be aftershocks that will be recorded seismically,” Ebel said.

“If aftershocks reach a magnitude of 2.8, 3.0 or 3.1, let's say people on the North Shore of Massachusetts will likely feel them as well as people in coastal New Hampshire and coastal southern Maine.” He said.

Last year, residents of parts of Massachusetts felt a 4.8-magnitude earthquake centered in New Jersey.

An earthquake shakes the state of Maine

Police and acoustic scanners from York County, Maine captured the initial response to the earthquake.

A dispatcher can be heard saying: “We're not sure what's going on. We're getting calls from all over the city about an explosion.”

“We had a pretty big shake up here at the station too,” says another person.

The Maine Emergency Management Agency has asked residents not to call 911 unless there is an emergency.
