The Geological Survey says seismic activity near Yellowknife has been misidentified

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported that a seismic “event” occurred near Yellowknife around 8:33 PM MST on Wednesday, but Canadian seismologists say it hasn’t really happened.

The event, which was identified by automatic detection from the USGS, was posted on Canada Earthquakes and News Facebook page and was shared more than 200 times.

The event near Yellowknife should not be confused with two other earthquakes in the southeast of the Mackenzie Mountains outside Wrigley earlier this week.

Andrew Schaeffer, a seismologist with the Canadian Geological Survey (GSC) based in Sydney, British Columbia, said the event was out of the ordinary due to its location, timing and depth. He added that it was not recorded and posted on the GSC website because analysts had not confirmed the automated wave model data.

“This event (Yellowknife) later in the day is likely to be more than the eruptions occurred naturally, and it is much deeper than any explosion we have anticipated,” Schaeffer said in an email. “In conjunction with the time it has a slight difference with the larger event in the Mackenzie Mountains, I expect this (occurring near Yellowknife) to be a false event and not actually real. The ones in the McKenzie Mountains were really real.”

The activity is located about 100 kilometers southwest of Yellowknife, has a strength of 2.9 degrees and a depth of 14.9 kilometers.

A screenshot from the United States Geological Survey shows that a small seismic event occurred about 100 kilometers southwest of Yellowknife on August 13.

Camille Brion, another seismologist at GSC, said in an interview Friday that it is common for the US survey to publish spontaneous detection data without analysts reviewing it – in this case from the Alaska Seismic Center – to quickly get information to the public. In the event of a larger earthquake.

“In the event of a major earthquake, you want people to be notified right away which is why (seismologists) don’t review everything right away,” she said. “It is very likely that this has never happened and it will be removed from the database and that it is the wrong location.

“When dealing with an automated system, you will get the wrong locations which is why it is important for people to go through the wave model data to make sure it is real.”

Mackenzie Mountains

Schaeffer said the Mackenzie Mountains are usually seismically active and are a regular site of earthquake activity. The two earthquakes reported in the mountains earlier in the week definitely occurred.

On a Wednesday night at around 8:34 PM GMT, a 3.9 magnitude earthquake struck about 140 km southwest of Wrigley – located in the southeastern region of the Mackenzie Mountains.

The next morning, there was another earthquake, possibly a follow-up to the first, with a magnitude of 3.6 at around 8:38 am GMT.

“They are both perfectly normal earthquakes because the Mackenzie Mountains are somewhat seismically active like a small mountain range,” said Schaeffer. “It is not uncommon for earthquakes of 3 to 4.5 degrees – up to 5 degrees – to occur multiple times in the Mackenzie Mountains.

“Because of the low population density, they never felt it,” he said.
