Editorial: Schools are returning in a state of uncertainty | Opinion

Even in common years, the first two weeks of school will see hiccups. The buses run late, the children run the wrong lines, the kindergarten’s butterflies turn into an upset stomach. Everything is going in the end and the Sunnah is in rhythm.

But this is 2020, which saw everything in our path – the earthquake, anyone? – except for locusts. Although there were homicide hornets for some time.

Would be great if all we had to deal with was a kid left in a bus or an unexpected fire exercise. But the global Coronavirus pandemic in the past five months has prompted us to confront a public health crisis that has not yet been fully understood by science. Five months ago, North Carolina closed schools when the conditions – and the consequences – were much less serious.

Now, we are back to the chapter we are supporting. We cannot suspend our children’s education while we wait for the medical world to overcome COVID-19. But we must be flexible, tolerant, and ready to adapt to the emergence of the same circumstances. We must hold decision-makers accountable when tough calls are needed.

The next challenge

The school district appears to be in better shape than it was five months ago in its ability to handle online learning, which will be the bulk of students’ learning. Children whose parents choose personal learning twice a week will still have their children on school-owned computers three days a week. This time, however, teachers appear better organized and prepared for strategies to ensure participation, especially for the nearly 4,000 children whose families have chosen to learn full-time online.

In last month’s meetings, education board officials explained how teachers would handle lesson planning and implementation. Although nothing can overcome this one-on-one interaction with a teacher kneeling on a child’s desk, teachers seem ready to communicate with their students as meaningfully as possible.

So the real challenge for the region will be on the operational side. Can schools adhere to strict daily health screening protocols for every student who passes through the door? Will bus drivers know what to do? Since children will eat in classrooms rather than cafeterias, will meals be delivered correctly and on time? Can schools ensure social distancing is monitored and enforced to the extent possible? Or will we end up on national television like that high school in Georgia with hallways crammed with students without masks?

Expect many moments of grace and forgiveness in the future.

Optimism and alertness

But while all of these questions are legitimate, what will happen when positive cases of Coronavirus occur among students and staff?

“We need to build on the facts, backed up by the data and guidance we receive from experts in local and state health departments,” Superintendent Bob Gremsey told the school board last week. “As each new confirmed case manifests itself – and there will be confirmed cases – we will act with judgment and measure with the health and safety of our students and staff as a top priority.”

We take it at his word for it, but who’s going to shoot these shots in Moore County? Usually, this is not a matter of dispute. The state says that the director of the county health department is supposed to decide whether to close a classroom, class, or school.

But in a meeting last week with Robert Whitman, the besieged public health director in Moore County, it appeared he wanted no part of his power.

“I will be assessing this on a school-by-school basis in cooperation with the school administration,” Whitman said. “Dr. Grimesey will make the final decision on whether or not they need to close schools.”

With all due respect, Grimesey is not a health risk assessment authority. Whitman. This is why we are concerned about how decisions are made as cases evolve.

The plans are made. Now that we are implementing, we move forward with optimism – and vigilance.

Unlike physical insurance agencies, websites don't have a specific schedule and they are available at any time. Drivers that have busy working schedules, can compare quotes from anywhere and at any time, even at midnight. Multiple choices. Almost all insurance providers, no matter if they are well-known brands or just local insurers, have an online presence. Online quotes will allow policyholders the chance to discover multiple insurance companies and check their prices. Drivers are no longer required to get quotes from just a few known insurance companies. Also, local and regional insurers can provide lower insurance rates for the same services. Accurate insurance estimates. Online quotes can only be accurate if the customers provide accurate and real info about their car models and driving history. Lying about past driving incidents can make the price estimates to be lower, but when dealing with an insurance company lying to them is useless. Usually, insurance companies will do research about a potential customer before granting him coverage. Online quotes can be sorted easily.
