Tourists and residents of Greek holidays fled on Monday amid fears of more earthquakes.
Schools were closed and emergency crews were deployed on the volcanic Santorini Island after a rise in seismic activity from fears about an earthquake that is likely to be strong.
Reserves were also requested in many nearby Aegean Islands – all famous summer holiday destinations – after more than 200 earthquakes were recorded under the surface of the sea in the region during the past three days.
Some local residents and workers went to travel agents looking for aircraft tickets or ferries to leave the island, and AEGEAN has doubled the number of flights from Athens to Santorini during the next two days.
Mobile phones on the island caused warnings on alert about the possibility of rocks, while many earthquakes caused noisy factors.

The authorities have banned access to some coastal areas, including the old port of the island, which are close to the slopes.
“These measures are preventive, and the authorities will remain vigilant,” said the Minister of Civil Protection, Vasilis Kikilas, late on Sunday after the Emergency Government meeting.
“We have a very extensive geological phenomenon to deal with it,” said Prime Minister Kiriacos Mitsotakis of Brussels, where he was attending a European meeting. “I want to ask the inhabitants of the islands first and foremost to remain calm, to listen to civil protection instructions (power).”
While Greek experts say earthquakes, which are more than 4.5, are not associated with the Santorini volcano, they admit that seismic activity pattern is a cause of anxiety. Government officials met with scientists throughout the weekend and Monday to evaluate the situation, while schools were also closed in the Amorgos, Anafi and IOS is also close.

Residents are concerned about the frequency of earthquakes, which continued throughout Sunday night to Monday. “I never felt anything like that and with this hesitation – an earthquake every 10 or 20 minutes. Michels Girontakis, who is also the director of the Santorini Philharmonic Orchestra, said:“ Everyone is worried even if some of us hide that does not cause panic, but everyone feels anxious. “.
“We went out yesterday and our performance. Despite the earthquakes, the vicharmone led to a religious occasion.” When you play, you cannot feel earthquakes but there were earthquakes when we were in the church. No one can know what will happen. People can say what they like, but this has no value. You cannot face nature. ”
Residents and tourists were notified of avoiding large internal gatherings and areas where rock slices could occur, while hotels were directed to the drainage of swimming pools to reduce the damage of possible buildings from the earthquake. The rescuers at the fire service who arrived in the island on Sunday held yellow tents as a starting area inside the basketball field next to the main hospital of the island.

“We arrived last night, a team of 26 rescue officers and one rescue dogs,” said the Dean of Fire Fire. They spent tonight in their cars.
“We had earthquakes before but nothing like this. Nadia Benomar, a Moroccan tourist guide who lived on the island for 19 years, said. Things.
Others said they are ready to bear the risks. The Yiannis Fragiadakis worker was far away but said he had returned to Santorini on Sunday despite earthquakes. “I was not afraid. I know people really worried and left, and when I got to the port, it was really busy, it was like summer.”
“I plan to stay and hope that the restaurant will start working (for the holiday season) in three weeks.”
South Korean tourism, Sao Jin Kim, from Seoul, arrived on Sunday on a family vacation. “We had dinner last night at the hotel and felt moderate shaking about 10 times. But in the middle of the night, we felt a great charge and a great shook, so I reviewed the news report, we became half and a half appearance to know what the situation is,” adding that she did not plan to change her travel plans. .

The island attracts more than three million visitors annually to its white villages that were built along the dramatic slopes formed by a huge volcanic eruption – considered one of the largest in human history – more than 3500 years ago.
This explosion, which occurred around the year 1620 BC, destroyed a large part of the island, and of a wide area in meters (foot) of ash and believed that it contributed to the decline in the ancient Maino civilization, which flourished in the region.
Although a volcano is still active, the last noticeable eruption occurred in 1950. The prominent Greek earthquake, Gerasimus Papadubulus, warned that the current earthquake sequence – on display on living seismic maps as a growing group of points between the Santorini, iOS, Aborgos, and Anafi – it can indicate a larger imminent event.
Greece is located in a very active part of the world of the world, and earthquakes are frequent. The vast majority do not cause any slight or non -injuries, but the country has also seen fatal earthquakes. Seismic cannot be predicted, but the authorities take measures as a preventive measure.

Here is a closer look at the current situation:
The authorities said about 200 earthquakes with sizes ranging between 3 and 4.9 were recorded from Saturday to Monday between Santorini and the nearby passion of Amorgos.
Zeressimus Papadopoulos on Greece TV said that seismic activity began on January 24, but it intensified on Saturday, with an increase in frequency and enlargement.
Santorini:
The current rift line extends to about 120 km (75 miles), but only the southern part was activated between Santorini and Amersus. Earthquakes have concentrations under the sea floor, about 30-40 km (18-25 miles) from any of the islands. Scientists say this is good news, as the underground earthquake center can be more destructive. But the large earthquake can also lead to tsunami, so the authorities have warned people against moving away from coastal areas and heading inward if they feel a large earthquake.
To date, no damage or injuries has been reported, although some simple rock slices occur.
Can earthquakes lead to a volcanic eruption?
Santorini is located along the Hellenic volcanic arc, which extends from Biloponiz in southern Greece through the Cycladic Islands.
Last Wednesday, the Ministry of Climate in Greece and Civil Protection announced the monitoring of sensors for “moderate alternative seismic activity” inside Caldira on the island. A similar volcanic activity was recorded in 2011, when it lasted for 14 months and ended without any major issues.
Simon Calddar's advice, what are your rights if your destination is active in seismic? Fears of the strong earthquake on the Greek island of Santorini rising after more than 200 tremors below the sea during the weekend. Athens for evacuation. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises to avoid some old ports and buildings in Santorini, in addition to large interior gatherings. They are unlikely to receive restoration operations, because seismic activity poses a known risk in Greek concerns. Some holiday companies may allow destination changes. It remains with the current travel insurance because FCDO has not issued a warning to travel. Read Simon Calder's guide for your rights.
Another volcano – a submarine called Kolumbo – is about 8 km (5 miles) northeast of Santorini, closer to the current earthquake center.
But earthquake scientists say that earthquakes are not related to volcanoes.
The Ministry of Civil Protection said on Monday that the meeting between government officials and scholars decided that the seismic activity inside Caldira in Santorini “remains at the same low levels as in recent days”, but “a special increase” between Santorini and Amersus.
Scientists are still trying to determine whether the multiple earthquakes are the foreground – smaller earthquakes before a large bus. Papadubulus said that there is a “high possibility.”
The main villages of Santorini were built along the Edra Caldera Volcanic Caldira – which produces the dramatic scene of consecutive white houses and sunset views that make the island very popular, but also raises concerns in a large earthquake. The transparent slopes make some areas vulnerable to rock slices.
What is the date?
The rift line that was activated was the site of the largest earthquake in Greece in the last century: it reached 7.7 degrees of the Amurgus earthquake that was struck in 1956, which led Santorini and killed more than 50 people.

Santorini is also one of the largest volcanic bangs in human history. Known as the Mino eruption, it happened around 1600 BC and destroyed many of the previous round island, giving Santorini its current shape. It is believed that the explosion has contributed to the decline in the ancient Maino civilization.
Although it is still an active volcano, the last noticeable eruption occurred in 1950.
“What we should realize is that the Santorini volcano produces very large explosions every 20,000 years,” said Effhymios Lekkas, the earthquake world and head of the Scientific Monitoring Committee of the Phoenix Hellini Arc, last week. “3000 years have passed since the last explosion, so we have a very long time before we face a big explosion.”
