The researchers say the early detection of earthquakes can be improved significantly by taking advantage of the Internet with a leading new algorithm.

The optical cables used in cable TV, phone systems and global web matrix now have the ability to help measure seismic grumbling thanks to modern technological developments, but harnessing this achievement has proven a problem.

A new paper published today in the International Geophysical Journal seeks to face these challenges by air conditioning of a simple algorithm based on physics to include optical fiber data that can be used along with traditional earthquake measurements.

The new algorithm works by taking the energy that was observed in receptions – either the fiber -optical cable channels and/or earthquake measuring devices – and the migration of that energy again through the place and time to find a coherent peak in the energy corresponding to a potential earthquake.

This approach was also found to be effective in the discovery of earthquakes in volcanoes, ground thermal wells and ice ice.

Dr. Hudson said: “The main power of this physics -based approach is that it works well even in loud environments, because the noise is generally less cohesive than the earthquake signal.” “It can also be applied outside the box to any network of fiber.”
