Santorini Island Square Sermon Al -Jazeera: Experts explain
More than 4000 small earthquakes were shaking the Greek islands around Santorini and near the Colombo volcano. The larger the point, the greater the earthquake; Darging the point, and the deepest earthquake. So what is happening? Experts from the German Research Center for Earth Sciences explain what is happening with the Santorini earthquake swariness below. Image via Marius isky/ GFZ. Since late January, more than 4,000 Santorini's island has rocked the Greek island of Santorini. The earthquake center is located in the vicinity of the underwater volcano – Kolumbo – which sits between Santorini and Amorgos is the neighboring island. The biggest earthquake in this series was 5.2 on February 5. Officials were cautioned by Santorini under the state of emergency, as tourists rushed to leave the island. On February 6, 2025, the German Earth Science Research Center attempted to answer the noticeable question about what is going on.
Why do these earthquakes happen?
Experts at GFZ said:
Between Santorini, the underwater volcano as Colombo and Amegeos, many earthquakes range between 4 and 10 km [2.5 and 6.2 miles] Deep has happened for more than 10 days. The size of the earthquakes up to the maximum or higher degree. The activity began with weak earthquakes under Santorini and was moving in the north in recent days along the weakness of the southwest to the northeast.
These earthquakes are not uncommon under active volcanic systems and have also been observed over and over again in the shadow of Santorini and Kolumbo. One of the possible reasons is volcanic activity, as in molten rocks or other liquids that rise up in the Earth's crust. Another possibility is the movement of the Earth's paintings, which can lead to pressure in the rock and the sudden release of these pressures and thus to earthquakes.
Also imagined mix: the individual parts of the tectonic plate Aega in the area surrounding Santorini are a few millimeters away from each other. This leads to the extension and mitigating the Earth's crust, similar to the dismantling of the difficult dough, which becomes thinner in the middle. Where the dandruff extends, liquids and fame can rise.

Santorini is made of volcanoes
Santorini is part of an island group made of intertwined shield volcanoes. These volcanoes are all compliment from the tectonic paintings that meet here. Therefore, earthquakes may be due to volcanoes or can be due to the basic tectonic activity. It was the last large eruption in Santorini in 1950. Experts said at GFZ:
The area below the santorini volcano is calmly quiet in terms of seismic. The last time there was a similar seismic activity that was there in 2011, with very shallow earthquakes at a depth of 1 to 2 km. However, there was no eruption.
The direct issue is that small earthquakes can lead to landslides, so officials urge people to move away from slopes and beaches. Tsunami – caused by landslides, volcanic explosion or a larger earthquake – is not contained.
Will the Santorini earthquake swariness lead to a large earthquake or a volcanic eruption?
The situation in Santorini is currently calling for increased awareness. But can we know if the main earthquake or volcanic eruption is imminent? The scholars said at GFZ:
The date of the swarm of this earthquake cannot be predicted. There are allegiance phenomena, especially in volcanic earthquakes. We are currently looking at time development and accompanying changes in the swarm of the earthquake, such as height or landing.
Volcanic explosion also cannot be predicted. However, unlike earthquakes, volcanic bangs often have clear sponsorship phenomena. These include floor and earthquakes, which condense before the explosion and move towards the surface of the Earth or the bottom of the sea. To date, there is not enough data to warn of an imminent eruption. However, warnings to avoid slopes, for example, are correct and important.
What would happen if there was a large eruption or earthquake?
Experts at GFZ said:
In July 1956, Zalazlan occurred with sizes of more than 7 in the active area now. One of them happened in the upper ground crust and caused a local tsunami with a wave heights of up to 22 meters [72 feet] On the island of Amorgos. Earthquakes caused widespread damage to the area. Fifty people died. In the current earthquake chain, we see a much weaker earthquake. The rupture area of 1956 has not yet accumulated enough energy due to low displacement rates, but movements in other inactive rupture areas cannot be excluded.
If an earthquake is similar to that in 1956 or a volcanic eruption (the last large eruption in the Kolumbo volcano occurred in 1650) will happen today, stronger effects can be expected due to the most intense population: the strong land may be shaken may cause the buildings to be destroyed or caused by the collapse buildings , Especially the old buildings or those that have not been created to be seismic resistance. Tsunami can strike coastal areas and lead to floods, not only on Santorini, but also in the neighboring islands and Greek main righteousness. The landslide collapses can occur in Caldira. However, the probability of this is still low.
The bottom line: Santorini earthquake shook tourists and withdrawing thousands of the island under the state of emergency. Scientists from the German Earth Science Research Center explain what is going on.
