Santorini under the state of emergency after thousands of earthquakes, Greece
The Greek government declared a state of emergency for Santorini Island on February 6, 2025, after a series of earthquakes began at the end of January.
“We are announcing a state of emergency in the civil protection in the municipality of Thira, in the regional unit in the South Aegean region, to respond to emergency needs and deal with the repercussions of seismic activity registered in the region in recent weeks,” the official statement is reading.
More than 700 earthquakes have been recorded in the region since January 26, with 800 of which exceeded 2.5.
The National Observatory of Athens, the Geological Institute (Noa-Gi) recorded multiple strong earthquakes in recent days including, M4.8 at a depth of 12 km (7.4 miles) at 05:16 UTC and M4.2 at a depth of 11 km (6.8 miles) At 05:11 UTC on Feb 7.
The most powerful earthquake so far was M5.2 at 19:09 UTC on February 4, with a peak center 16 km (9.9 miles) south of Amorgos and a depth of 11.2 km (6.9 miles).
Seismologists who watched the activity stated that although a large earthquake exceeds the M6.0 is still unlikely, the possibility cannot be excluded.
“It seems that a seismic mistake, which is very large, is able to produce an earthquake over 6.0 Richter,” said Professor Manolis Scorsellis of the University of Tsaloniki.
Scorse Laborgy activity is similar to a recorded seismic activity.
Activity is taking place near Colombo, 6.5 km (4 miles) volcano (4 miles) northeast of Santorini. Kolumbo is part of the largest volcanic Santorini complex known as its main eruption in 1650, causing great damage and vitality due to bundles, tunaami, and gas emissions.
The volcano remains active, with water thermal activity and periodic seismic tufts, making it a major monitoring axis in the region.
Ground deformity studies from the NKUA geophysics laboratory indicate a slight increase in the region, with movements similar to those registered during the seismic crisis 2011 to 2012, which lasted 14 months, but did not lead to eruption.
“There may be some Seismo-Volcanic activity, which means that the volcano can show signs of awakening, but there is no chance of explosion,” said Professor Evetheimius Likas, head of the Hellenic Organization for Earthquake and its protection (OASP.
The Greek authorities have activated the emergency response plans “Talos 2” and “Encyladus 2”, increased monitoring and deploying additional seismic tools. Rescue teams on standby mode remain while air surveillance drones track down the potential Earth.
Seismologists remain divided into whether the current activity is purely tecton or whether the deep rock movements contribute.

The Israeli authorities urge increased preparation for a potential tsunami that affects their country. The Vice -President of the National Security Council stressed the need for proactive measures during a meeting with emergency agencies and government ministries on February 5.
“A group of earthquakes can precede a large earthquake that may happen soon,” said Ariel Heiman, chief geologist at the Institute of National Security Studies (INSS).
He also pointed out that seismic activity can calm down without more escalation. Hyman said that although Israel is about 1 200 km (746 miles) from Santorini and will not suffer from direct tremors, an earthquake below the strong sea surface in the region can generate tsunamis capable of reaching its coast.
“It takes time for a tsunami to travel across the Mediterranean, and even if the earthquake leads to one guidance, there will be enough time to issue a warning before arriving. So, we must be alert but not worried.”
Cities like Haifa have identified evacuation methods and the internal front leadership encourages families to review emergency plans.
Earlier this week, the UK Foreign Office, the Commonwealth and Development, updated his travel consultant for Greece, and urged travelers to avoid large internal gatherings, old buildings, and some ports such as AMOUDI, Armeni, Korfos and the old port of Fira due to the possibilities of landslides.
Last week, about 11,000 residents and tourists evacuated Santorini. Blue Star Paros and Kissamos operators added emergency methods to Piraeus, while AEGEAN increased flight schedules to absorb departure. Nine flights 1 294 passengers from Santorini to Athens were transported on February 3 alone.
Santorini is a part of the Hellenic volcanic arc and is one of the most active areas in Europe. The most destructive historical earthquake, the M7.5 event in 1956, led to a 252 meter (82 meters) tsunami (82 feet), killed 53 people, and caused widespread destruction. Another volcanic eruption occurred in 1950, as it produced the small lava dome and simple explosive activity.
