Scientists say that several thousand earthquakes that were discovered near the Greek island of Santorini

Athens, Greece (AP) – Scientists have discovered several thousand earthquakes, said the Crisis Management Committee at the University of Athens, within a little more than two weeks near Santorini Island in Greece. The earthquake cannot be excluded.

The unusual barrage of earthquakes that began in late January has raised the authorities' concern. “The preparation of our health facilities for natural disasters, such as earthquakes, is of vital importance,” said Deputy Minister of Health Marius Smstokleus during his visit to the hospital.

Scientists were closely monitoring the earthquake swarm between the Santorini and Amegraples, and the volcanoes in the region. They say it is unclear whether dozens of earthquakes are every day – ranging from 3 to 5 size for approximately 5 or above – is an introduction to a much larger earthquake or will continue with frequent low -sized earthquakes for several weeks or months.

In general, about 12,000 earthquakes were recorded with sizes greater than 1 since January 26, when 109 occurred on Monday alone.

Thirteen of Monday earthquakes are larger than 4, while many of the similar sizes were struck on Tuesday. The largest so far, the size of 5.2, hit Monday night and followed about two hours by another of 5.

“The possibility of a major earthquake cannot be excluded,” the statement said.

Athens University said that scientists are publishing more survey equipment in the region on Tuesday to monitor the situation, while seismic specialists and volcanic scholars meet with government officials on Tuesday evening as part of regular discussions on the situation.
