Jackson, Miss (Associated Press) – A Mississippi man who has bid to put a giant mosquito on the new state flag, a design that has gone viral on social media, said he created it as a joke.

Thomas Rosette, the operator of the ship on the Yazoo River, told Clarion Ledger that he created the “mosquito science,” which includes a giant mosquito surrounded by a circle of stars, to make fun of a co-worker who was against changing the flag. Work on said he was very familiar with the Mississippi mosquitoes and felt it was an appropriate way to represent the state.

“They are everywhere,” he told Ledger. “They are terrible.”

Magnolias, stars, Gulf Coast Lighthouse, Teddy Bear, and even Kermit the Frog are featured in some of the more than 1,800 suggestions made by the general public for the new Mississippi flag and were posted on Monday, August 3, 2020, in the Mississippi section of the Archives and History website. The state recently retired from its recent state banner with the Confederate Battle Emblem which has been widely condemned as racist, and a nine-member panel will design an alternative that cannot include the Confederate symbol and must bear the phrase “We Trust God.”

Mississippi is currently in the process of choosing a new flag. Legislators held a landmark vote this year to remove the old state flag, which featured the Confederate Battle Flag, a symbol widely condemned as racist. A nine-member panel will recommend an alternative science.

Rosette and nearly 3,000 Mississippians have since submitted designs for a new state flag. Some designs were more serious than others. Among the submissions are flags decorated with a lighthouse on the Gulf Coast, a teddy bear, Kermit the Frog and a mosquito flag.

The committee approved 147 proposals for the second round, and the State Archives and History Service posted those proposals on its website on Monday. Many were surprised by the mosquito flag pieces, along with the dozens of designs showing Mississippi magnolia blossoms.

The reaction on social media was immediate: People loved it.

“Personally, I love mosquito science.… The trick (sic) is on the brand,” a Mississippi resident wrote on Twitter.

Another commented, “I slowly realize my love for mosquito science may not be ridiculous.” “It’s too bad, it’s good. I’d like to fly the mosquito proudly.”

But the hopes of supporters dashed on Tuesday. Archives and History Corporation released a statement saying the design was submitted in error and will be removed from the list.

Soon people began to express their remorse.

One guy wrote on Twitter, “I don’t feel like anyone dodged a bullet here, I just missed an opportunity.”

Another said “No.” “Mosquito Science is destined to be on that tour!”

“Hold the mosquito flag high,” wrote a Mississippi journalist on Twitter.

Rosette told Ledger that although it was short-lived, it was nice to see people congregate around the science.

He said, “I’m a cliché of the underdog stories and mosquito science was definitely the underdog who would compete.”
