Earthquake BC raises concerns about intermittent alerts from the national warning system

Some residents in the southwest of British Columbia seem to have a warning after reports of separate and inconsistent alerts from the national early warning system during the 4.7 earthquake on Friday.
Complaints appeared for the first time on social media after the earthquake focused 24 km northeast of Seychelles, British Columbia, on the Sunshine Coast coast on Friday afternoon, when many residents said they had not received an alert from the early warning system.
Among them was Campbell River, British Columbia, the teacher and first aid host, Nat Raidwolf Bouj, who was at her workplace at a local school when she hit the earthquake and only got an assurance of the earthquake after a colleague looked actively for online information.
“It was sufficient as my office was shaking, my walls were shaking,” said Ridwolf Bug about the severity of the shaking. “He touched with five or six colleagues immediately after that, and none of them had a confirmation that the earthquake happened.
“I don't know anyone in my direct field that got an alert.”
Other reports on social media platforms such as X and Facebook showed that people who receive alerts from 15 to 22 minutes of shaking, while others reported that no warning was not received at all, in some cases, the couple in the same family received alert.
Alerts in Canada's natural resources seismologist Alison Bird said on Saturday that the alerts sent from the Ministry's early warning system “are evaluated.”
But she noticed that the timing of when people will get a warning dependent on both the distance from the earthquake and how they receive alerts.
Bird said that the alerts on Friday were issued only in an area around the earthquake center – located on the Sunshine Coast coast – where “strong shaking” was expected, but some people outside the region had received these warnings.
“Some people may be outside the area to alert EWE have received the alert because their device was able to receive a signal from the cell tower inside the EEW area,” Bird said in a written response. “Everyone inside the strong shaking area … should have been alerted.”
Bird also said that there may be confusion about the alerts sent to the Federal Seismology and the provincial system – which notifies the inhabitants of “important events” that may also include forest fires and other disasters.
Brennan Day, a member of the Legislative Society BC, said that he was in Courtyan, British Colombia, on Vancouver on Friday, and he did not know that there was an earthquake until he received a text from his father in the nearby Dove Kreik who felt shaking but he did not try any warning.
“My wife was in a client's house – we are in the same plan (mobile phone service) – I got an alert about two or three seconds before the earthquake started already, which is great,” said Dai. “But I was 10 kilometers away, I didn't get an alert.
“Many people I know in the COMOX … are now commenting that it has been completely hit, whether they are on alert or not. So I think there is a serious look that should be taken in the emergency alert system, because if this is done geographically Everyone must be on a certain mobile phones who have obtained this alert, and this did not happen.
A day, a conservative member of British Columbia and represented Cortina Komox at the Province's Legislative Authority, said that the region was fortunate because the warning system “got a trial tour” before a larger earthquake, but added that sporadic warnings were “great concern.”
He said: “At the end of the day, if we have a huge earthquake, then the issue of life and death will be whether we can respond – get a table, and take yourself to a safer position -”
“(District) has a plan to prepare for emergency, but it needs to work … important seconds.”
On Friday, the earthquake followed a number of wireless tremors between 1.0 and 2.0 in power, and there was no report on the damage from the earthquake that occurred at 1:26 pm local time at a depth of about one kilometer.
“It is important for warning systems to work properly in similar cases, because some have already expressed his dissatisfaction after Friday,” Raedwoul Pugue, a learning support teacher who works with students with disabilities.
“I had a few students who were very worried about what happened and only needed confirmation – yes, it happened, because they were not really sure – and also they are fine.”
“We have students with disabilities in movement, so we will actually need more time to enter them into a safe location. We have students with development disabilities where even if their movement is not affected by their disability, they will need more confirmation and more heads about what is happening.
“The more time we have to provide them with what they need to move to a safer spot, we hope, in the hope of infection and reduce risk.”
