An earthquake, a volcanic eruption, a massive flood, a war, a tsunami, a hurricane, a hurricane, an explosion are all events we hear about in the news. Any of us who have lived long enough have heard of these events in places far away or close to home, and many can share personal accounts of these events. We often think, “What a horrible thing”, and move on with our lives without thinking much.

What we have faced in the past five months has profoundly affected humanity all over the world. Amid a global pandemic, I cannot even imagine the despair and fear that the Lebanese people experience after another disaster. But there is something I see in the Lebanese as they respond to almost unimaginable challenges. It is the way in which people come together to help each other and contribute to the common good.

Whether it’s COVID-19, which is a hurricane moving on the east coast of the United States, destroying habitats and pesticides that threaten species – like bees and butterflies – on which humankind depends, or hungry children, or starvation in faraway places or in our region, a desert. Food in our community, human trafficking, litter strewn along the highway, homeless people, abused children, victims of domestic violence, injured or sick, abandoned or lost animals – every one of us, whatever, wherever we live, whatever our means, has the power. To make a difference our own way, no matter how small.

Few or none of us will change the world astronomically on our own, but each of us can make an impact. Collectively, with compassion and humanity, we can truly change the world. Several studies have proven that volunteer work and charity work are also beneficial for the donor.

It is very easy to get busy with solving our personal family or work problems; We forget that every person we meet on the street, highway, or workplace carries a burden that we know nothing about.

A little kindness, patience, forgiveness, or a helping hand can mean a lot. Push it forward. Each of us can build or destroy someone; We all make this choice daily. Sometimes when we try to help, that might not be appreciated; Must try anyway. Each of us is responsible only for our own behavior and choices.

One young Pueblo, 16-year-old, Ryan Young, saw one small space in Pueblo needing improvement, and chose acting. Engage his scouting squad and local businesses to restore a park on the campus of the University’s Riverfront Nature and Wildlife Discovery Center in Rock Canyon on the Arkansas River.

Ryan enlisted his fellow Scouts to help; He asked the Lowe’s and Rocky Mountain Landscaping to donate the materials, and he led the way to a garden renovation that would now attract bees and butterflies and provide fun for all who pass by the road.

This project will help Ryan win the Boy Scouts Eagle Award, and it has also helped his community. He found a way to help, and took the initiative to make a difference in the Pueblo. The Nature and Wildlife Discovery Center extends its sincere appreciation to Ryan, not only for the project, his leadership, and his hard work, but also for the example he set for the rest of us.

The Nature and Wildlife Discovery Center welcomes everyone’s participation in improving the beautiful pueblo stones! But if gardening, trail building, and habitat restoration aren’t really your favorites, that’s okay. Pueblo has a bunch of other nonprofits that can also use your help right now!

It is okay to protect ourselves and our families, and to take care of ourselves and our families. For now, wearing a face covering, washing our hands, and maintaining a safe physical distance from others will protect ourselves and others. We can search for ourselves and still look beyond that to a person, family, friend, park, non-profit organization, community, country, and world that desperately needs our compassion, energy, and the human fitness we have right now. We’ll be glad we did.
