Emphasis on Urban Resilience to Earthquake: A Webinar

Experts said in a webinar that adopting an urban resilience approach, coordination between professionals and creating awareness among communities is a must for facing the earthquake disaster.

They came up with the opinion in a webinar entitled “ Imagine a disaster for a safer Dhaka city ” organized by RTI International as part of the World Bank funded Urban Resilience Project on August 13, according to a statement on Saturday.

Dhaka is located near three major geographical fault lines, making it highly vulnerable to earthquakes.

According to their estimates, a major earthquake could kill several thousand lives and cause economic losses by destroying major infrastructure.

With this in mind, they emphasized the need to adopt an urban resilience approach, coordinate professionals and create awareness among communities.

The first critical step to improving urban resilience is to imagine what would happen during a disaster. This is important in a country that has not experienced a major earthquake in over 100 years.

The spokesperson said disaster imagination is essential to encouraging government officials, professionals, educators and the general public to engage in disaster risk reduction.
