Earthquakes shook a life method on a farm in northeast

The parents of Bou Hedges lived on their farm, north of Fort St. John, British Columbia, nearly 50 years ago, where they operated Dead Horse Creek Cattle at the property where natural spring bubbles arrive near their home.

It seems peaceful – but the hedge said that the earthquakes resulting from the natural gas industry operations are “completely stressing them” as the couple wonders in the eighties of the last century “when the big one will strike.”

Hedges lives in Fort St. John, about 1,400 km northeast of Vancouver, and he was visiting the farm when an earthquake hit a few years ago.

“It seemed that a large truck hit the house,” he said. “He just shook the entire house and there was a giant sensation and everyone woke up.”

A series of at least four earthquakes ranged from 3.1 to 4.3 peace in northeastern British Columbia recently, between February 8 and 12.

OarmQuakes Canada said in a bulletin, while the British energy organizer in Colombia confirmed that the cracking caused the strongest earthquake during the night on February 11.

Also known as hydraulic cracking, cracking includes fluid injection and sand in drilling holes under high pressure, causing rock break and besieged gas.

The February 11 earthquake was strong enough to feel it in Fort St. John – 105 km southeast of the earthquake center – where Heideg said he felt under his apartment.

Hedges said that his family is frustrated by what he described as a lack of transparency, proactive communication and communication by the BC energy organizer during a “continuous escalation” of the broken activity near his parents ’farm.

Since an earthquake, he said the spring flow that is the lifeblood of the farm owned by his parents, Bill and Marilyn Hedges, has slowed down to a relative meager.

At its peak, the spring was usually flowing at 10 or 11 liters per minute, but Bo Hedges said it was due to two liters, “barely enough to water the house, not to mention animals.”

Hedges suspected other direct effects on livestock – he said his brother, who lives and works on the farm, called the energy organizer the next morning to the February 11 earthquake to report two calves prematurely.

Hedges said that the two were the beginning of a “huge” start of calves. He said that the farm was witnessing three to five births every day in the middle of the birth season, but it found itself concerned with about 40, which was born in the two days following the earthquake.

He said that the family began to feel a regular shivering on the farm about five years ago.

Listen Hedges talks about the effect of earthquakes on the farm:

Cutters are concerned about the effect of crushing earthquakes.

“Then in the last three years, it was important.”

Brent Ward, a professor at the Department of Earth Sciences at Simon Fraser University, said that there are low -level natural earthquakes in northeast BC

But the amount and size [has] “It has increased due to cracking. The real question is to what extent can they get?” He said.

The energy organizer BC said in a statement that it was followed by some annual contrast in the 3 or higher earthquake number during the past decade.

But “there is no indication of an increasing direction in these upper size events” in the region.

Four vasies were recorded near Fort St. John.

The organizer emphasized that the February 11 earthquake was due to the cracking by the torpedo oil, one of the largest natural gas producers in Canada.

The organizer said that the company suspended the cracking activity after the earthquake and is not planning to restart in the well plate.

Hedges said the family met a representative of the company. Tormaline did not answer questions from the Canadian press.

The SFU suite said that the natural springs stem from the fractures in the first place that may turn during the earthquake, causing changes in the flow of water. He pointed out that the 7.7 earthquake affected the hot springs in the Haida Jawi archipelago off the northern coast of BC in 2012.

On the Horse Creek Dead Farm, hedges said that his family is waiting for even the earth's melting to assess whether the natural flow may be restored in the spring, or if they have a well.

Meanwhile, livestock drink on the farm from the “safety mesh” tank.

The organizer said that he did not receive any complaints related to the early birth of calves after the February 11 earthquake, but if that happened, the site will visit if necessary.

“When reviewing the evidence, we will determine whether any compliance procedures are required to prevent or reduce any additional effects,” the statement said.

Unbearable link between earthquakes and livestock

Hedges said it took a few days until the livestock settled after the February 11 earthquake.

“We get bears, wolves, ugir and all kinds of things that wander through the herd and may move them a little. This was above that.”

It is a “disturbing” phenomenon, which added the hedges. “You don't want to get angry, hurt a person and harm herself.”

There is limited scientific literature on the potential effects of earthquakes on livestock.

He said it is difficult to draw a causal relationship between earthquakes and calves.

But if the animals feel the earthquake, it will not be surprising that they are forced and existed, and there is a link between stress and calves.

“Stress and sizes are in fact, they are linked to each other,” he said. “Even the natural way the cow provokes the beginning of labor is that there is a system inside the fetus that begins to produce … cortisol, which is the stress hormone, and leads to a whole series of events that lead to the birth process.”

“We are still there.”

More than 15 companies usually assemble the cracking across the peace area, where the regulator maintains a system of 35 earthquakes.

Six companies operate within the newly created northern seismic monitoring area, where Dead Horse Creek is located.

Energy organizer BC issued an order to monitor North Monnene on February 13, saying that he “strengthened” his supervision of induced earthquakes.

Each of the new demand and the pre -arrangement of a region close to natural gas companies requires operations immediately to stop if they lead to a specific seismic event.

In the current seismic monitoring area, the threshold is an earthquake of 3 within five kilometers of cracking operations.

But in the north of Monnene, the threshold is the size of 4, where it leads to the question of the question about the reason for its height.

The hedges also wonder if his family's fears about earthquakes are taken seriously.

“The public in these rural areas … we are still there,” he said.

“We should not feel the unity of these activities, and it seems that it takes a huge thing … until the organizer makes some change.”
