The “earthquake” tariff sends the charging industry to the status of crises
World Shipping CEOs this week met in Long Beach, California, to attend a major annual conference, and expect to discuss market trends and chain challenges.
Instead, they found themselves in developing crises.
On March 4, President Donald Trump has mostly free trade contracts with the largest commercial partner in the United States, with 25 percent on the goods of Mexico and Canada. The White House also applied another 10 percent duty to China, the highest similar height a month ago.
This step sent shock waves through global trade, which sparked fears of stagnation, high prices of consumers and logistical chaos. While strengthening the customs tariff was a long time ago, one of the signing issues of Mr. Trump, the veteran trucks at the TPM25 conference from the S& PLABAL in Long Beach said they do not expect to follow this completely.
In the latest developments, the Trump administration said on March 5 that it will provide one month's exemption for “any upcoming cars through USMCA”, referring to the current commercial deal called the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement. But Canada will not get rid of the revenge customs tariff if Mr. Trump leaves any American duties on the applicable country, according to Bloomberg News, citing a senior Canadian government official.
Mr. Trump threatened the high definitions for years, and a significant possibility has been understood globally. In the twin ports in Los Angeles and Long Beach – the largest American portal of Chinese Import – the sizes of shipping swollen in recent months, a sign that importers were moving in shipments before possible trade restrictions.
This style is familiar: during the first term of Mr. Trump, the port traffic increased when companies raced to the stored goods, only to drop the customs tariff for Chinese imports that started in effect.
Mr. Dean Crook, an analyst at Dat Freight and Analytics, said that half a continent has jumped shipping rates between the United States and Canada since the last Mr. Trump in November 2024.
“It is clear that the two trucks were putting as much stock as possible,” he said. “There was a real increase in the rate of crossed fluctuations, size and prices between the two countries and some of the highest rates we saw within two years.”
What was a world free from customs tariffs for many companies that suddenly served a world in which they had to scramble to reach money to pay 25 percent of the value of imports. For many, this means rushing to carry out the basics, prepare an account with customs and protect the American border to pay new import taxes.
Other companies all over the region are also running to adapt to industries from transportation to food – and even the rare world of private aircraft.
At Trucking Grupo Fletes Mexico, which is headquartered in the border city of Ciudad Juarez and has operations throughout Mexico, customers request discounts to compensate for higher costs of definitions.
But with thin margins, he said he could not say yes.
He said that if the definitions remain in place for a long time, it may need to be demobilized by some of the 2600 employees of the company, or re -thinking about investment and growth.
“We do not have many options to reduce costs,” he said. “There is a lot of uncertainty and instability.”
In Canada, Ugowork is planning in Quebec, which makes fork batteries, to divide a 25 percent average with its customers in the United States.
“But at some point, this is not sustainable.” He said he was considering opening a factory in the United States, where half of Auguork agents were.
In Bondi Prode, based in Toronto, which distributes fresh fruits and vegetables, the Vice President of Finance Paul Sando said the company could not absorb the cost increased by 25 percent and will have to transfer some of them at least to customers. Citrus fruits, tomatoes, peaches and berries are among the affected goods.
Bondi also performs production, importing fruits from the United States or Mexico, and then sold them to the American northeast.
“I laugh because it is just thinking about the mind, but, yes, this will be an effect in two directions for the final consumer,” said Mr. Sando.
Mr. Greg Raif, CEO of Elevate Aviation Group, who provides rented flights and advising customers in aircraft purchases, said in the companies' jet companies, some American buyers strike the stop button temporarily.
Mr. Reef said that spare parts are a great consideration, which prompted potential buyers of the aircraft made by Bombardier, based in Quebec, to assess the total cost of ownership.
However, Bombardier has spare parts distribution centers in Chicago and other places, and many components are manufactured in the United States and are not subject to American definitions.
“If you bought a plane from the Canadian manufacturer, you are married to any Canadian import tasks,” said Mr. Riv.
While he was still trying to understand the scope of customs tariffs on March 4, “commercial aircraft will greatly strike.”
At the TPM25 conference, the news of the Minister of Commerce, Howard Lootnik, broke out on a potential compromise with Mexico and Canada during a session with the Trade and Customs expert Beit Mento. After presenting a set of questions from retailers and importers, it ended with some words of advice.
“The panic is very expensive, right? Mr. Mento, the customs and trade manager of the DSV logistics provider, said:“ This may be more expensive than patience. ”The best thing you can do for your customers, to your executives, is preaching calm, not exaggeration in the reaction, nor reactions to the knee.” Bloomberg.
