The seismic activity in Sundhnúkagigar Crater Row slowed down, but four earthquakes were measured yesterday morning in a quick sequence. A natural danger expert says that the next eruption is approaching.

“The earthquakes are still taking place and in one week, we have seen a clear increase in seismic activity,” says Steinunn Helgadóttir, a natural risk expert at the Icelandic meteorological office.

She says that seismic activity has increased in the magma room, and in recent days there has been increasing activity near Grindavík, northwest and northeast of the city.

“These earthquakes that were measured near Grindavík are something that we have not seen even before the last explosion, and we evaluate that it is approaching the explosion,” says Helgadotter.

She adds that the explosion is expected to be small, as was the case in the last explosions.
