Sister tells of pride on a mural of a nun in her hometown

The sister of a nun who has been attributed fertility miracles since her death in an earthquake has spoken of her pride in a new mural in her hometown.

Claire Crockett, 33, was killed in an earthquake in Ecuador in April 2016. The building where she was studying collapsed.

Mrs. Crockett, from Londonderry, was a larger-than-life character who was an actress before choosing the religious life. She turned down a chance to apply on children’s television channel Nickelodeon to become a nun.

She announced that she would take her holy orders with the servant sisters in the mother’s house with “beer in one hand and a cigarette in the other.”

The nun’s mural was painted in her native Brandewell in Derry, near the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes.

The painting was funded with money raised from the sale of candles intended for Sister Claire.

Before a blessing service for the mural on Sunday evening, Sister of Sister Megan Nessel gave the credit for it to the people of Derry.

“They continued to make a mural for a while and they liked it next to the cave,” she told the Palestinian News Agency.

“Claire is originally from Brandwill. We made Sister Clare candles and the money we collected from that did the mural. It was the people of Derry and beyond who did the mural.”

Ms. Nessel described how pilgrims now travel from all over the world to visit her sister’s grave in the city cemetery.

“A lot of people said they were reaching out to Claire, and she interceded for them,” she said.

“Lots of people have come up with stories of IVF and people who just couldn’t conceive and went up to Claire’s grave who got to Claire, and now they have their little ones.

“We have a lot from all over the world.

“We were standing at the mural on Saturday and there were girls from America and Canada here to visit her grave. It’s just fixed.”

“My other sister Shawna, we are only two now. Our phones never stop with people calling for candles. We were sending them everywhere – America, Glasgow, England, everywhere. People trust her very much.”

Sister Crockett’s motto to life “all or nothing” is written on the new mural.

Mrs. Nessel said, “Claire said she used to write a blank check every morning, and all that God wanted her to write on the check and she gave her everything.”
