UNICEF invites the Taliban to lift the ban on girls' education

Islamabad (AP) – On Saturday, the United Nations Children's Agency urged the Taliban rulers in Afghanistan to lift a permanent ban on girls' education to save the future of millions who have been deprived of their right to education since the Taliban returned to power in 2021.

The call to UNICEF comes when a new academic year started in Afghanistan without girls after the sixth grade. The ban said that the agency deprived 400,000 girls of her right to education, thus totaling 2.2 million.

Afghanistan is the only country in the world that prohibits female and higher high school, as the Taliban justifies the ban that he says does not comply with its interpretation of Sharia, or Islamic law.

“For more than three years, the rights of girls in Afghanistan have been violated,” Catherine Russell, UNICEF Executive Director, said in a statement. “All girls must be allowed to return to school now. If these young girls who are able and legislators continue to refuse education, the repercussions will continue for generations.”

She said that a ban on teaching girls will harm the future of millions of Afghan girls, adding that if the ban continues until 2030, “more than four million girls will be deprived of their right to primary education.” She added that the consequences will be “disastrous”.

Russell warned that the retreat of doctors and midwives would leave women and girls without decisive medical care. This situation is expected to lead to an estimated 1,600 additional deaths and more than 3,500 deaths. She said: “These are not just numbers, as they represent lost spirits and families have been shattered.”

The Afghan Taliban government has overcome earlier this year a global conference hosted by Pakistan, as the Nobel Prize winner, Malala Yusufzai, condemned the rights of women and girl in Afghanistan as the apartheid.
