Living – and writing – for fear of the great literary axis

I did not start writing a book about a very pregnant woman who tries to stay survived from an earthquake. I did not start writing a book at all. I was simply a very pregnant woman with a horrific state of insomnia, and lied at night imagining a huge earthquake. Will he get a ceiling cave? With my stomach as it was, do you ask under the bed? Should I be born alone, without running water or a doctor?

I lied on the bed on my phone, and read the accounts of women who are born in Haiti after the earthquake, in war areas, during snowstorms. I tried to prepare myself by watching YouTube videos for women who are born alone in the woods. He refused the sound low so that I don't wake up my husband sleeping beside me. Tears of tears under my face.

I wanted to sleep very hard, and the only way to sleep was to know more, but the more I knew, the more I sleep.

The integration area in CASCADIA is seven hundred miles and lasts from northern California to British Columbia. When the two tecton plates finally explode, they will start in a huge earthquake – eight or higher. The last of which was in January 1700, which means that the possibilities of the Grand Cascadia earthquake that takes place in the next fifty years is almost in three.

Like many Portland, I have never heard of the earthquake until I read the article Catherine Schulz in New York, “The Big Big”, which was detailed with brutal accuracy how the earthquake would flip the area, which collapses bridges, which led to the release of gas fires, which led to the destruction of seventy -five percent of all buildings in the state. For a day or two after I read the article, I was afraid.

The article continues after the advertisement like many Portlanders, I have never heard of the earthquake until I read the Kathryn Schulz New Yorker, “The Big Big One”, which was a detail with the brutal accuracy how the earthquake will determine the region, which collapses bridges, which resulted in the nullification of gas fires, which led to a destruction of a capacity of seven percent Construction in the case.

But then I moved. I was in my twenties, I try to build a profession as a writer, try to make friends, and try to discover adults.

For years, my seismic anxiety was asleep, under the surface of a psychological. Sometimes it emerged. A friend moved to an apartment from the third floor in a brick building, and sometimes I was sitting on her sofa and imagining the collapse of the building. She invited me to sleep and gave an excuse about the need to be at home for the dog.

Then she got pregnant. Suddenly, the earthquake was all I could think of.

One day, I was in IKEA Shopping for some children's purposes at the last minute and the building began to shake. My body was completely gone. This was, this was the big. I was wearing a garment of motherhood and ballet apartments that hardly contain my swollen feet. She left the bottle of the water in the car. Nobody knows where you were. So this was what everything ended.

With the exception of the shaking was not an earthquake, it was a large truck that drives it.

After the building stopped shaking, I knew immediately that I would write a novel about a pregnant woman walking home from IKEA after a Cascadi earthquake. I knew immediately that I wanted all the details in the book accurate.

How long will the shake continue. How IKEA was in the northeast of Portland fare during a huge earthquake. The way you make a stroke in dizziness, makes you sick. Which bridges will decrease. How many minutes before wiping a tsunami from the coast. How much effort is required to raise a concrete beam from the human body. The way the way appears when it is swallowed by liquefy.

I walked the same way as my main personality, through the golf course, across the industrial zone, across the northeast of Portland. I have repeatedly traveled to IKEA with my newborn baby, to be lost in the warehouse maze. She spoke to a geological world, to a structural engineer, to a first respondent in Kashmir days after the 2005 earthquake, in an attempt to save children from collapsed schools.

Every street I remember in the book is real, most of the places I describe are real. The length and severity of the shake, the destruction of the city, the street conditions and the bridges, the failure of the energy network and the cells of the cells, the supposed official response, the risk of brick buildings, and the risk of gas fires – lost hours in searching for the speed of machine guns from the water after the humiliation.

Sometimes I couldn't know if I was trying to write a novel, or just chase fear the way my dog is chasing with the smell of the cat. The more I learn, the more I should know.

Friends, teachers' writing, agents, everyone kept telling me that I was very worried about getting them properly. “It is a novel,” tell me. “You can just make these things. No one expects this to be accurate.”

But even if you want to bear the imagination, how can I create a very real catastrophe to come? Not only coming, but coming to my city, next to my door? What will be worse, which reduced the magnitude of what this earthquake will do for our city, and allows people feel calm on indifference? Or exaggerating this, and the people of people without reason? It became obsessed with accuracy.

At one point, I had my main personality walking in the mountain neighborhood. Is the entire hill slide south? I said to myself it does not matter. I should write the scene only without worrying about it. At this stage, I had an agent and a second child on the way. The truth is that I simply did not have time for mania.

When the world collapses around us, we actually realize the amount of modern life that isolates us and our trust, and we get an opportunity to experience something more effective and meaningful.

But again and again, I sat to write and found that I could not. I thought about all the people who lived in these homes, in this neighborhood. How can I think this is a presentation of the destruction of real homes and real life? I ended up spending the best part of a week in the search through old reconnaissance documents before I gave up and finally a student student to research the case.

This wrote to me:

This took a great deal of thinking. It is made of sand, gravel, and rocks that the ice floods deposit in Missola about 15,000 years ago – so they are unacceptable, mainly a pile of rocks. However – they have survived many, and a lot of major earthquakes at the time without collapsing. It seems that with the dry soil conditions that we have in October (Note from Emma: this is when the book is set, so we have modified the results to match the potential weather), there should not be a lot of activity for ground collapse.

Knowing that the hill is likely to be standing, I managed to write the scene.

The more you wrote about the earthquake, the more you say. As it turned out, the worst scenarios that were playing in my mind were not backed by facts. Not only did the facts lead me to destruction and chaos, but also to a feeling of hope and wondering that its peak is deeply optimistic about humanity.

Through my research on how humans work during disasters, I encountered Rebecca Solnett, a paradise built in hell. Solnit puts a convincing argument that disasters make people test incredible altruism, contact and even joy. When the world around us collapses, we actually realize the amount of modern life that isolates us and our trust, and we get a chance to try something more effective and meaningful.

Anxiety about the Cascadia earthquake is not a unique experience. He belongs to thousands of people who live in this region of the world, and many of them do not. I met these people and fled silently to each other, while people around us visit “the elder!”

I met a man who had two children and told me that he and his wife pledged not to be on the other side of the river of their children. Sometimes I imagine them, their days are a coordinated dance.

I spoke to a man who cried on the phone because he was very worried about the brick school attended by his children. A woman does not go to the coast of Oregon anymore. Another woman told her children that they should go to college outside the state.

Initially, I was concerned that my book, who wrote to relieve my anxiety, is now a harbinger of anxiety for others. But whenever you talk to readers, the more you hear that there is relief in seeing their black and white fears, in having a space and excuse to talk about the earthquake with their societies. For me personally, what started as the two self -protection devices turned into a deep commitment to trying to help my city prepare for this disaster.

The other night, I thought I felt the house began to vibrate. I thought the earthquake was. But books shelves are linked to the wall. And leave sneakers next to my bed. If the earthquake will come tonight, it is better to get a rest, I thought, and I rolled and promised to sleep. Because now I know. I know.
