A new tool that depicts how a large earthquake can be in southeast Missouri

The United States Seismological Union in the United States contains a new tool that expects the effects of the potential main earthquakes in the New Zone in Madrid. The planning tool aims to help local governments to plan earthquakes that vibrate southeast Missouri.

CEO Brian Blake said that the new Madrid region has approximately 300 earthquakes annually.

“It mainly takes the earthquake scenarios using computer simulations and says if we have this earthquake, what are the possible effects? We have three earthquakes for the earthquake there now,” Blake said. “One of them will happen in southeast Missouri around Sexston and Scott County.”

The scenario of one of the 7.5 earthquake is depicted in Scott County, between Cape Gerardo and Sikston. The results will be huge – more than 500 deaths, tens of thousands of displaced population, and billions of dollars as compensation.

“It is a planning tool for the local government, the state government, and for individuals in the type of preparation such as the first respondents groups or hospital associations, health care coalitions and these types of groups,” he explained.

The online tool helps in estimating the need for things such as inspections, hospitals and other emergency responses.

He said: “It is interactive, so you can click on the provinces and see potential effects and you can enlarge the map, as you know, see the potential effects on the transportation infrastructure, or buildings such as basic facilities, and types of things.”

The new seismic region in Madrid extends primarily from southeast of Missouri to parts of the northeastern Arkansas, West Tennessee, southwest of Kentucky, and southern Illinois. In 1811 and 1812, this region produced some of the largest earthquakes in the history of the United States.
