NIEMI, Okayama Prefecture – Mio Hashimoto, 15, when the Great Hanshin Earthquake struck, was shocked when she realized how many lives had been lost in her neighborhood in the disaster. It will prove to be life changing.

Her desire to immortalize a precious life in some way led her to pursue a career as a sculptor specializing in ultra-realistic reproduction of animals.

The earthquake that struck the Kobe region on January 17, 1995, killed 6,434 people.

A native of Hyogo Prefecture is holding an exhibition of her work at the Niimi Museum of Art here to celebrate the museum’s 30th anniversary. It also aims to increase hope of rebuilding the city, which has been hit by torrential rains in recent years.

In 2018, western Japan was hit by severe floods that also affected Okayama Prefecture. The following year, the northern part of the governorate was subjected to devastating torrential rains.

The solo show, which collects wooden carvings of animals by the famous sculptor, is hosted by the city government and sponsored by the Okayama General Office of the Asahi Shimbun and other organizations.

The event features 100 life-size or nearly life-sized animal sculptures, including wood carving of Moco, the main character of “Lovely Muuuuuuuco!” A popular manga series also turned into an animated TV series, along with 600 sketches and graphics.

Visitors are allowed to take pictures of all exhibits.

The event continues until September 6. The venue is closed on Mondays except for national holidays.

Admission is 800 yen ($ 8) for adults, 500 yen for college students, 300 yen for middle and high school students and 200 yen for elementary school students.
